Domaine Raveneau: A Legendary Chablis Producer

Situated in the northernmost vineyards of Burgundy along the Serein River, Domaine Raveneau is the undisputed pinnacle of world-class Chablis. Founded in 1948 by Jean-Marie Raveneau, the estate’s legendary status was forged through his marriage to more vineyard land and an unyielding dedication to traditional, artisanal viticulture. Today, the ultra-collectable 9.2-hectare estate is directed by Jean-Marie’s sons, Bernard and Jean-Marie, alongside the third generation represented by Isabelle Raveneau. The family adheres to an exacting, hands-on methodology in the vineyards, employing severe winter pruning and manual harvesting to limit yields and optimise grape health, making these limited-production bottles some of the most fiercely allocated white wines in the world.

A Style of Textural Density and Electric Minerality

The winemaking philosophy at Domaine Raveneau avoids modern technological trends, yielding Chardonnays of unparalleled structural definition, waxen texture, and piercing, Kimmeridgian limestone acidity. The hand-picked grapes are pressed immediately and settled briefly before undergoing fermentation using native yeasts. A defining element of the Raveneau style is the total avoidance of new oak; instead, the wines are aged for roughly 18 months in neutral feuillettes, traditional, 132-litre Chablis barrels that are often decades old. This patient barrel ageing allows for a slow, gentle oxygenation without imparting woody flavours. The resulting wines strike an extraordinary balance between a creamy, honeyed mid-palate density and a high-tension, saline, and oyster-shell finish.

Sovereign Quality and Premier Cru Holdings

The global prestige and investment-grade quality of Domaine Raveneau are anchored by a majestic collection of old-vine parcels situated in Chablis’ most revered limestone slopes. The portfolio features three towering Grand Crus: Les Clos, Blanchot, and Valmur. Equally legendary are the estate’s premier crus, most notably the iconic Montée de Tonnerre, widely regarded as a grand cru in all but name, alongside exceptional parcels in Chapelot, Butteaux, and Forêt. By rigorously regulating yields and prioritizing natural concentration, the Raveneau family achieves spectacular consistency across varying vintages. Built with immense structural integrity, these highly allocated white Burgundies are notoriously tightly coiled in their youth and require patient cellaring, routinely evolving over decades to reveal profound layers of white truffle, crushed stone, and citrus blossom.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Wine Advocate 91

Notes of citrus oil, green apple and pear mingling with hints of freshly baked bread and white flowers introduce the 2018 Chablis 1er Cru ForA t, a medium to full-bodied, satiny and charming wine that’s elegant and precise, with a crisp core of fruit and chalky grip on the finish.
