Le Pin: Tiny Production, Ultra-Collectable Pomerol

Since its inception in 1979, Pomerol’s Le Pin has risen to become one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive, desirable and expensive wines. Named after a lone pine tree that sits outside the winery, it is minuscule in production at just 600 cases or so in a typical vintage and immense in quality. Allocations are some of the region’s most fiercely fought over and cherished.

Le Pin: Opulence, Decadence and Luxury

The unique terroir here at this tiny patch of Pomerol is responsible for Le Pin’s opulent and hedonistic style. The Grand Vin comes from a tiny, 2.8ha plot of Merlot that sits on deep gravel and iron-rich clay. Under the brilliant perfectionist owner Jacques Thienpont, who has a relentless and exacting drive for quality, the wines from here are consistently outstanding.

L’If and L’Hetre: Two Gems From The Same Superb Stable

While the price of Le Pin puts it out of the reach of many, there are options for those who want an insight into the winemaking here at a fraction of the price. Chateau L’If is a project of the Thienpont’s from St Emilion and is excellent. Chateau L’Hetre comes from vines in the Cotes de Bordeaux and is an outright bargain. Both are made by the same team and with the same level of care and expertise as the Grand Vin. They are well worth snapping up as they are relative bargains.

Tasted blind. Blackish crimson. High toned. Really very well composed with sweetness and tea leaves and no excess of tannins. Quite spicy. Smooth with a suggestion of cough linctus. Long. [19/01/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2044

Antonio Galloni 98+

A heady, exotic wine, the 2018 Le Pin is rapturous right out of the gate. Waves of intense dark fruit cascade over the senses. The 2018 is a majestic, hypnotically beautiful Pomerol that really dazzles. Inky dark fruit, cherry, menthol, spice and chocolate are all fused together. The 100% new oak, a bit intrusive en primeur, has assimilated nicely. Time in the glass brings out exotic floral and spice notes. Le Pin is beyond my means, and probably beyond most readers’ means, but it is undeniably great. And I mean great. [Antonio Galloni, 29/03/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2058

Neal Martin 97

Tasting the 2018 Le Pin from barrel, I was intrigued by its Left Bank-like personality on the nose. Now in bottle, though it is not as obvious as before, it still flirts with Medocian traits thanks to its very attractive, very subtle graphite and marine scents. It has wonderful delineation, pixelated and focused. The palate is medium-bodied and demonstrates a touch more tannic spine. Wonderfully focused and detailed, maybe a touch spicier than recent vintages, with disarming harmony and effortlessness. It is self-aware that it is a great Le Pin. [Neal Martin, 08/03/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2045

Wine Advocate 98

The 2018 Le Pin is made of 100% Merlot, picked the last week of September with yields of 30 hectoliters per hectare. The wine has a pH of 3.7, an IPT (total polyphenol index) of 70 and 14.5% alcohol. Deep purple-black in color, it is a little reserved to begin, offering glimpses of tar, fertile loam and truffles with slowly emerging notes of baked black cherries, stewed plums, mulberries and underbrush plus hints of black pepper, hoisin and chargrill with a waft of garrigue. Full-bodied, the palate is loaded with taut, muscular fruit and heaps of earthy accents, with a firm frame of ripe, rounded tannins and just enough seamless freshness, finishing very long and wonderfully savory. vinum 95-98

Juicy, fresh and bright. Voluminous on palate – great volume but also line and tension. Sandy, mineral tannins on the back end. Has a mineral finish. Faintest hint of spice and bacon. [Matthew Hemming, 01/03/2019]
