Leoville Las Cases: A 2nd Growth That Can Challenge First Growths

The St Julien 2nd Growth Estate of Chateau Leoville Las Cases is one of the Left Bank of Bordeaux’s elite wines. Located on the edge of the appellation with vineyards abutting those of the mighty Chateau Latour on one side, this is a statuesque and towering wine that is renowned for its capacity to age.

The Grand Vin represents around 45% of production, and with the 2nd wine Le Petit Lion, around 10%. Also look out for Clos du Marquis, which is not a second wine, but comes from its own specific parcel of vines.

The style and substance of Leoville Las Cases

Las Cases is located on the Leoville plateau and the deep gravel soils here are perfect for the Cabernet Sauvignon that dominates the blend. In recent years, Cabernet Sauvignon accounts for around 80%, with Cabernet Franc and Merlot making up the balance.

The style is one of authority, structure and complexity. Las Cases is Bordeaux at its most aristocratic and confident. It is not a wine to drink young, but rewards, perhaps even demands cellaring to show at its complex best.

A First Growth Rival

Las Cases has a reputation for challenging the First Growths in sheer brilliance. For Robert Parker, “Leoville-Las Cases is unquestionably one of the great names and wines of Bordeaux… consistently of first-growth quality”. Jane Anson highlights how it “is often compared to its Pauillac neighbour Latour in profile”. Praise does not come much higher.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 97

The 2019 Leoville Las-Cases is tasted from two bottles, but it is the second that really delivers the goods. It has a beautifully-defined bouquet with blackberry, black olive, subtle marine scents and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins, cohesive, quite high toned towards the finish with touches of mint and cedar. Very fine. Tasted blind at the Southwold annual tasting. [Neal Martin, 28/02/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2055

vinum 94

New oak and fresh tobacco. Great sense of fluidity and harmony on the palate. Whilst being pretty powerful, nothing is tough or out of kilter. Tannins are layered and finely strutured. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2023]

Wine Advocate 98

The 2019 Leoville Las Cases is a brilliant young wine that will delight Bordeaux purists. Unwinding in the glass with scents of cassis, dark berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, it’s full-bodied, layered and tightly wound, with a deep core of fruit, lively acids and an abundance of rich, powdery tannins. Concentrated and serious, much like its immediate neighbor Chateau Latour, it is likely to emerge as one of the vintage’s longest liveda and greatesta wines. [William Kelley, 10/03/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065

Antonio Galloni 96+

Just as it was from barrel, the 2019 Leoville Las-Cases is a wine of pure and total sophistication. There is not the size of some recent vintages, but instead that heft is replaced by cool refinement. The expression of fruit leans into the redder end of the spectrum as opposed to the typically darker Las-Cases profile. Hints of cedar, tobacco, mint and blood orange linger. I can’t wait to see how it ages. [Antonio Galloni, 23/02/2022]

Anticipated maturity: 2022-2049

JancisRobinson.com 19

79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc. Barrel sample. Deep purple-black to the rim. Dark and brooding with immense depth. Blackcurrant and graphite nuance. Beautiful lift on the palate, so much energy and power. Ingrained minerally freshness. Huge tannic base but the texture smooth and remarkably refined. Zest and force but absolute precision. Lingering and intense, stays on the palate for ever. One of the greats from this estate. (JL) [08/06/2020]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2050
