Domaine des Lambrays: A Historic Morey-Saint-Denis Estate

Dating back to the 14th century, Domaine des Lambrays is one of the oldest and most storied properties in the Côte de Nuits. Located in the village of Morey-Saint-Denis, the estate achieved international prominence under the longtime stewardship of winemaker Thierry Brouin and was elevated to Grand Cru status in 1981. Acquired by the luxury group LVMH in 2014, the domain has entered a modern era of significant investment and refinement under the direction of Jacques Devauges, who joined as head winemaker in 2019. Today, the property spans approximately 11 hectares, and the viticulture has transitioned entirely to certified organic and biodynamic farming to maximise the purity and health of its historic vines.

The Singular Expression of Clos des Lambrays

The undisputed centrepiece of the estate is its near-monopole holding within Clos des Lambrays, a legendary Grand Cru vineyard of which the domain owns nearly 99%. This historic site is characterised by an intricate topography with varied slopes and exposures, split between upper, middle, and lower sections featuring varying concentrations of limestone, marl, and iron-rich clay. To capture this complexity, the fruit from different parcels is vinified separately, frequently utilising a high proportion of whole-cluster fermentation, ranging from 50% to 100% depending on the vintage. This traditional technique imparts a signature aromatic profile marked by wild berries, exotic spices, and fine-grained, chalky tannins that reflect the unique geology of the clos.

Style, Quality, and Ageing Potential

The overarching style of Domaine des Lambrays is defined by its aromatic elegance, structural transparency, and athletic tension. Rather than pursuing heavy extraction or opulent weight, the winemaking emphasises a refined harmony between power and finesse. The wines are aged for roughly 18 months in French oak barrels, with the use of new oak carefully adapted to the vintage character to preserve fresh acidity and subtle earthiness. These Pinot Noirs are highly prized by collectors for their exceptional balance and consistency. While approachable in their youth due to their vibrant perfume, the top bottles possess the structural components to age gracefully for decades, gradually revealing deep layers of forest floor, leather, and complex savory nuance.

Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com 17+

Their first organic vintage. Deep garnet. Muscular. Slightly roughly extracted with a grainy finish after a rich, sweet palate. Certainly makes an impression and has grand cru weight. (JR) [16/03/2026]

Neal Martin 94

The 2019 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru Grand Cru has a very typical bouquet for the vineyard: quite floral in style and predominantly red-fruited, touches of kirsch and black truffle shavings and a light marine scent that emerges with time. The palate has a sweet core of fruit that lends this Morey an almost Vosne-like allure. The whole-bunch is very well integrated. This is a better showing than at the Burgfest tasting just a couple of months earlier. Tasted at the Clos des Lambrays vertical in Morey-Saint-Denis. [Neal Martin, 13/03/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2027-2052

Fine-textured, silken and refined. High-toned citrus tones bring fragrance and complexity, plus lift. Builds in the glass. There’s alcohol but whole bunches are bringing briary spice and some freshness. [Matthew Hemming, 01/09/2023]

Wine Advocate 95

The 2019 Clos des Lambrays Grand Cru is showing very well in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of raspberries, strawberries and plums mingled with scents of orange rind, rose petals and sweet spices. Full-bodied, ample and satiny, it’s a sensual, caressing wine with a fleshy core of fruit, polished tannins and lively balancing acids. This will offer a broad drinking window. [William Kelley, 19/12/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2060
