Producer Profile

Domaine Jamet: A Côte-Rôtie Landmark Producer

Perched on the steep, dizzying schist terraces of Ampuis, Domaine Jamet stands as one of the most respected and fiercely traditional standard-bearers of the Northern Rhône. The estate’s modern reputation was forged by brothers Jean-Paul and Jean-Luc Jamet, who worked together for decades to establish the domain as an international benchmark for pure, unadulterated Syrah. Following a split in 2013, Jean-Paul Jamet retained the historic cellars and the lion’s share of the vineyards, and today he capably directs the estate alongside his wife, Corinne, and their son, Loïc.

Managing roughly 11 hectares of prime hillside parcels, the Jamet family approaches viticulture with an artisanal, hands-on discipline, braving the vertical, stone-walled terraces without mechanical assistance to preserve the raw integrity of their ancient vines.

The Mastery of Whole-Cluster Inclusion and Multi-Plot Blending

The winemaking style at Domaine Jamet is celebrated for its aromatic wildness, firm structure, and transparent terroir expression, completely avoiding the oaky, highly extracted modern style. A defining characteristic of the estate is Jean-Paul’s masterful defence of multi-plot blending and his commitment to whole-cluster fermentation. Up to 100% of the stems are retained depending on the vintage, which infuses the wine with an intense, high-toned aromatic lift and vertical tannic tension. Fermentations take place with native yeasts in traditional tanks, followed by up to 22 months of ageing in neutral French oak casks (demi-muids and pièces). The estate rigorously caps new wood at around 15%, ensuring that the finished wine delivers a savoury, wild, and incredibly complex profile of cracked black pepper, smoked meats, tapenade, and driving granite minerality.

Jamet’s Immense Quality Across Côte Brune and Côte Blonde

The world-class quality and blue-chip status associated with Domaine Jamet are anchored by an extraordinary collection of old-vine parcels spread across more than twenty distinct lieux-dits in Côte-Rôtie. This strategic diversification allows the family to capture the full spectrum of the appellation, blending the powerful, iron-rich schist of the Côte Brune with the softer, limestone-veined soils of the Côte Blonde. The portfolio is headlined by their legendary classic Côte-Rôtie, but also features the hyper-rare, monolithic single-vineyard Côte-Rôtie Côtei Brune, produced only in exceptional years from old vines on the Brune hillside. Through low yields and non-interventionalist cellar work, the Jamet family achieves stunning consistency.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com 18.5+

Cask samples, tasted at the domaine. Sample 1 Slight smoke and animal, a little reductive but with vibrant fruit. Juicy and with a crunchy freshness, violet and ripe raspberry pip with a subtle minty note Pepper snap and wonderful freshness. Sample 2: Lesardes and Fongeant. Mineral and dark-fruit nose, smoky and juicy. Lots of square-like tannins – earthy and dark and a little coffee note – dark and smoky and direct in style. Sample 3: Collet and Cote Blonde. Very animal and smoky blackberry – super-expressive with crushed violets. Packed full of violet fruit on the palate and underpinned by a savoury note and ripe tannins – so much freshness here, and lots of depth of flavour. Sample 4: Gerine. This has layers of smoke and firm fruit. Lots of density, rich and peaty smoke here. Rich and rounded tannins and shows density and power all enveloped in a gentle cloak of velvet. Sample 5: Fongeant. Lots of tobacco here and bonfire smoke. Raspberry pip and ashy smoke. Loads of salinity and totally rounded tannins. Amazing, as another year to go in cask. Sample 6: Fongeant and Tartaras. Cool blue fruit here dominates with a nice menthol note. Lots of freshness here with a charred note and a euclaypt note on the finish. The tannins are firm and blocky at the end. Slight chewy note also. Sample 7: Le Plomb and Bonnivieres. Really lovely juiciness and peppercorn on the nose. Very weighty palate, dense and big – massive dense tannins! Sample 8: La Landonne. Lots of spice and freshness and oak is present here. Vanilla and power and lots of depth, salinity and freshness – a weighty note too. Beautiful. Sample 9: Blend of 5 parcels. Amazingly expressive – black fruits and lively dense raspberry and liquorice. Really rounded and juicy and has crushed liquorice and sweet fruit with incredible density and togetherness. Juicy and superbly put together. (AC) [15/10/2020]
