Giacomo Conterno: A Piedmontese Institution

Located in Monforte d’Alba, Giacomo Conterno stands as the definitive, global benchmark for traditional winemaking in the Langhe. The estate’s modern prestige was forged in the early 20th century by Giacomo Conterno, who pioneered the production of high-structure, long-ageing Barolo built to travel. This legacy of uncompromising excellence was elevated by his son, Giovanni Conterno, and is carried forward today by Giovanni’s son, Roberto Conterno. Since taking sole direction in 2004, Roberto has combined an unwavering reverence for historical methods with an almost clinical obsession with quality and technical precision. Managing a legendary portfolio of prime vineyards, the estate remains an institutional beacon for fine wine collectors worldwide.

Monumental Barolo Monfortino Riserva

The absolute pinnacle of the estate, and arguably of all Italian wine, is the legendary Barolo Monfortino Riserva. Sourced from the finest parcel of the estate’s crown-jewel Francia vineyard, Monfortino is produced only in exceptional vintages, representing a rigorous selection of the absolute best Nebbiolo fruit. Unlike the estate’s standard bottlings, Monfortino undergoes an exceptionally long fermentation and extended maceration in large wood vats, followed by up to seven years of ageing in neutral Slavonian oak casks (botti). The resulting wine is a masterpiece of architectural scale and structural density, combining searing acidity and monumental tannins with a hauntingly complex aromatic profile of iron, liquorice, tar, and dried roses that demands decades of cellaring.

The Pure Style Of Giacomo Conterno

The overarching style across the Giacomo Conterno portfolio is defined by an aristocratic austerity, profound depth, and incredible ageing potential. Whether crafting the flagship Barolo Francia, the chiselled Barolo Cerretta, or the newly acquired Arione, Roberto Conterno completely avoids modern cosmetic shortcuts. Fermentations rely on native yeasts, and ageing takes place entirely in traditional large casks to prevent wood aromas from obscuring the site-specific terroir. Through drastic green harvesting, meticulous sorting, and low yields, Conterno delivers stunning consistency across varying vintages. These highly allocated, investment-grade wines possess immense structural integrity, routinely evolving over decades into multi-layered expressions of peerless complexity.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96

The 2019 Barolo Cerretta has shut down considerably since I last tasted it, but the elements are also more put together in that the wine is a harmonious whole rather than a combination of individual components. Dark red fruit, rose petal, orange peel, spice and dried herbs are beautifully sketched. I would not dream of touching a bottle anytime soon. [Antonio Galloni, 04/01/2024]
