Chateau La Mission Haut Brion – First Growth Quality

This outstanding property is one of the Left Bank of Bordeaux’s great wines. The Chateau is located on a superb terroir next to sister winery Chateau Haut Brion in Pessac-Leognan. It is so good that it frequently rivals the First Growths in terms of overall quality. The Grand Vin is always among the top producers in any given vintage and in the best years, absolutely monumental.

The estate has a long history and is named after the Lazarist order who owned it from 1682 to 1792. The current owner is the American banker Clarence Dillon, who acquired the estate in 1983 and also owns Chateau Haut Brion.

The first wine of the estate is a superstar and is complimented by La Chapelle de la Mission Haut Brion, an excellent second wine. Like its First Growth neighbour, a world-class white wine is made here in the form of La Mission Haut Brion Blanc.

A Wine Of Considerable Grace And Finesse

The Grand Vin is typically an even blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. A touch of Cabernet Franc (usually around 10%) is added to give lift and fragrance. The soils are gravelly, with patches of gravel and limestone. This gives the wine floral aromatics, complexity and density all balanced by ethereal elegance and considerable grace. Like Haut Brion, La Mission ages magnificently well. For Jane Anson, it is so consistently impressive that “This is a wine that I would make a First Growth if the 1855 classification were not only to be re-drawn, but also expanded.”

The La Mission Blanc is a magnificent white wine: finely tuned, sculpted and powerful in the glass. It’s also very rare, with only 600 cases or so made in a typical vintage.

The Chateau makes three other wines:

  • La Chapelle de La Mission Haut-Brion:
    • Production: 4000 cases a year

  • La Clarte de Haut-Brion:
    • Production: 1000 to 1200 cases a year

  • Chateau La Tour Haut-Brion:
    • Area under vines: 5,05 hectares
      Production: 2000 to 2500 cases a year

Tasting Notes

vinum 96

Beautifully focussed and intense. Straight down the line with huge, piling, spice and drive. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2024]

Antonio Galloni 97

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion is a gorgeous, elegant wine. Silky and pliant, La Mission is all finesse. Fine tannins lend energy as the 2020 gradually opens with some coaxing. Today, the flavors are remarkably primary, and yet the 2020 is so persistent, so elegant. Hints of cedar, tobacco, gravel and dried herbs add aromatic complexity, but the 2020 is a mere infant. I can’t wait to watch it grow up. There is a bit of new oak that needs to integrate, but nothing elevage can’t take care of. [Antonio Galloni, 01/06/2021]

Neal Martin 98

The 2020 La Mission Haut-Brion was picked September 7-29. It has a very intense and beautifully defined bouquet of blackberry, wild strawberry, wilted violet petals and hints of orange blossom. It unfolded with aeration as I examined it side-by-side against its neighbor over the course of an hour. The exquisitely balanced palate is lightly spiced on the entry and segues into a very structured midpalate that frames the weight of pixelated black fruit. That spicy theme continues and is exaggerated toward a finish that fans out wonderfully. This is a less alcoholic La Mission Haut-Brion compared to recent vintages, a bit "cooler" and streamlined, yet no less intense and satisfying. An enthralling wine in the making from Jean-Philippe Delmas and his team. [Neal Martin, 26/05/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2060

JancisRobinson.com 17++

Full, embossed bottle 1,275 g. Cask sample taken 13 April. 54.7% Sauvignon Blanc, 45.3% Semillon picked 19 to 28 August. Estimated alcohol 13.8%. Very pale, low-key nose. Edgy and pungent with real freshness (more than Haut-Brion Blanc?). Sleek and dense with a certain smokiness and drive, but still pretty embryonic. Much less flashy and rich than this wine used to be. This promises well. [21/04/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2024-2037
