Petrus: Luxury, Exclusivity and Quality

Pomerol’s Petrus is one of the world’s great wines. A name that stands for all that is luxurious and exclusive, allocations are highly prized and back-vintages are absolute treasures. Its inclusion is the hallmark of a truly world-class cellar.

Made in limited amounts from a fabulous terroir, Petrus is an icon and a benchmark for both the Pomerol appellation and Bordeaux itself.

Petrus has a long history, but soared in the latter half of the 20th Century to its current position at the very top of the fine wine tree and perhaps the most famous of all fine wines.

What Makes Petrus So Special?

The reputation of Petrus is built on this peerless quality. Petrus is a wine known for its extraordinary richness, power, concentration, and complexity.

The vineyard of Petrus covers 11.4 hectares in Pomerol, and 100% Merlot. The soil is composed of a unique and ancient sticky blue clay that is only found here. This clay is excellent for water retention, allowing the vines to cope well with any summer heat. They also give the wine its distinctive power and opulence that is delivered in a measured and sophisticated style. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some of them are over 100 years old. This adds extra concentration, complexity and nuance.

These vines yield just 2,500 cases in a typical vintage, and they could be sold many times over, such is the demand.

Jane Anson sums up the style of Petrus nicely. “It combines wonderful aromatic persistency with waves of flavour.” Importantly, however, “what Petrus has over many other great Bordeaux is this simple pleasure at the same time – a seductive texture that is, well, just so simply enjoyable”. It is this that has made Petrus so beloved.

Tasting Notes

vinum 93

Just so beautifully naturally expressive. Starts small, really builds, but never shouts. There’s so much to admire but the very finish is seriously oaky and dry. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2024]

Antonio Galloni 99

The 2020 Petrus is a wine of pure and total sensuality. Silky, creamy tannins wrap around a core of dark red and black fruit. A wine with explosive depth but no hard edges and mind-blowing balance, the 2020 is so alluring, even in the early going. Time in the glass brings out lifted floral top notes that add freshness. What strikes most is the elegance of the tannins. I don’t think I have ever tasted a young Petrus like the 2020. Technical Director Olivier Berrouet gave the 2020 a bit more time on the skins than is normal. Aging was 17-18 months in oak. Let’s cut to the chase. The 2020 Petrus is profoundly great. [Antonio Galloni, 23/02/2023]

Neal Martin 98

The 2020 Petrus was bottled in June 2020. "I feel the wine changed a lot since primeur, and since bottling," commented winemaker Olivier Berrouet, "gaining an extra layer of complexity and more subtlety, the tannins are more polished. You still feel the tannins that have improved in barrel, but it needs aging." It has a spectacular nose that does not hold back: layers of intense black cherry, blueberry, crushed violet and incense rocketing from the glass and almost overwhelming the senses. The palate is medium-bodied yet fills the mouth, almost engulfing it with a payload of concentrated blackberry, cassis, and cracked black pepper. This is extremely harmonious on the finish. It’s more peppery on the finish than I recall. Likewise, it deserves more cellaring than I previously envisaged. Fabulous. [Neal Martin, 08/02/2023]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2070

JancisRobinson.com 18.5

100% Merlot. Cask sample. Rich, dense and opulent but reined-in, the tannic structure a framework of plentiful but really fine tannins. Lovely, lifted fruit expression, the type seen in top Merlot years (shades of 1998?). Plenty of freshness, so harmonious despite the alcohol degree. Very pure. Tremendous length. A step up from 2019 and at least on a par with 2018. (JL) [22/04/2021]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060
