Chateau Margaux: The Musigny Of Bordeaux

While Lafite is characterised by elegance and sophistication, Latour by brooding power and Mouton by flamboyance and exuberance. The First Growth of Chateau Margaux is defined by its incredible perfumed aromatics and sense of weightless power. It is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove that, for some, bears comparison with the Grand Cru of Musigny.

The second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Ch Margaux, is a small production gem, and the rare white, Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux, is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting white wines.

Chateau Margaux: An Iron Fist in A Velvet Glove

The eponymous estate of its appellation, Chateau Margaux, sits on a tremendous terroir of deep gravel that is perfectly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vines. The rest is made up of 20% Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Pockets of clay and limestone covered by gravel create a unique profile, and the soaring aromatics and beguiling mid-weight texture that are Chateau Margaux’s calling cards. There’s an uncommon delicacy to match the immense quality in Chateau Margaux that sets it apart from its peers.

Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux: A Sensational White

The Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux is a fantastic white. White wines have long been grown at the estate. In recent years, the white has been taken ever more seriously, and quality has jumped. A wine of opulence and weight, this is a wine that rivals the great dry whites of Pessac. However, with production generally sub 1,000 cases, there isn’t very much to go around.

Tasting Notes

vinum 95

Has a great finish, with lingering cocoa powder tannins. Dark and dusky throughout. Black and succulent fruit. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2025]

Antonio Galloni 96

The 2021 Chateau Margaux is creamy and supple, a classy Margaux with the volume turned down just a bit. Succulent dark cherry, red plum, spice and rose petal infuse the 2021 with layers of succulent depth. This is a quiet wine, but one that possesses notable richness for the year. Time in the glass brings out the aromatics, but this remains very much built on its fruit. [Antonio Galloni, 27/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2031-2071

Neal Martin 96

As I found out of barrel, the 2021 Chateau Margaux bides its time on the nose. At the moment, understandably, as it is just three months post-bottling, the new oak is quite prominent more than, say, Mouton or Lafite. But it is buttressed by ample blackberry and blueberry fruit and becomes increasingly floral in the glass. The palate is armed with extremely pure black fruit and a superb line of acidity, very harmonious with an incremental build in the mouth. Displaying wonderful mineralite and poise, this has actually stepped up a gear since I tasted it in barrel. I suspect it may well continue its melioration in bottle. [Neal Martin, 22/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2060
