Chateau Pichon Lalande – A Superb Super Second

The Pauillac Second Growth of Chateau Pichon Lalande (or Chateau Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande to give it its full name) is one of Bordeaux’s most revered properties.

Pichon Lalande is a beautiful Chateau located in one of Pauillac’s best locations. The building itself is stunning, think of what you’d expect the perfect Bordeaux chateaux to look like, and it’s this. The place and the wines all scream quality.

Some incredible wines have been made here over the years. The 1982, for example, is one of the finest reds from Bordeaux’s most famous vintage. In recent years, Pichon Lalande has undergone something of a renaissance, and it is now consistently outstanding. It has become one of the key En Primeur purchases in any given campaign.

The Grand Vin makes up around 50% of production, with the remainder going into the excellent second wine, Pichon Comtesse Reserve.

Class, Grace, Poise & Sophistication

Chateau Pichon Lalande is superbly located overlooking the Gironde River. It is in a sweet spot of Pauillac. To give an idea of just how well situated it is, parts of the vineyard touch those of the mighty First Growth of Chateau Latour.

The vineyard covers 90 hectares and is planted with 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. It sits on classic Pauillac gravels over iron-rich clay, which helps it cope well with the increasingly hot summers in Bordeaux.

In style, it is utterly captivating. The epitome of grace, sophistication, and poise. It is “just a stunning wine, easily one of my favourite estates in Bordeaux” for Jane Anson. For her, it has “a grace and vibrancy that delivers personality and signature year after year”.  This is not a burly and imposing Pauillac. Pichon Laladne is effortlessly chic, just oozing refinement, class and panache.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

vinum 94

Ripe and fleshy blackcurrant fruit. Has a tannic charge but this is entirely balanced by the glossy and succulent fruit profile. [Matthew Hemming, 01/01/2025]

Antonio Galloni 98

The 2021 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a towering wine. Just as it did en primeur, the 2021 dazzles from start to finish. The Cabernets are very high in the blend, and that comes through in a Saint-Julien endowed with ton of explosive vertical lift. Lavender, dried herbs, mint, spice, rose petal and a kick of orange peel are some of the notes that run through this striking Pichon Comtesse. The aromatics alone are compelling, but everything about the 2021 speaks to class personified. Bright saline notes extend the finish. In a word: sublime. [Antonio Galloni, 27/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2031-2061

Neal Martin 95

Just as I found from barrel, the 2021 Pichon-Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is stubborn on the nose at first, opening with a few swirls of the glass to reveal blackberry, cassis and light juniper aromas. The oak here is beautifully integrated. The palate is classical in style, the Cabernet patently in the driving seat as you would expect, given it constitutes 88% of the blend. I really admire the finish on this 21, as it appears to have gained delineation, mineralite and a little more persistence on the finish. This is an impressive Pauillac, brimming with freshness and character. Whilst it might be predestined to be overshadowed by surrounding vintages, best not to ignore this gem. [Neal Martin, 22/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2050
