Chateau Troplong Mondot – A Reinvigorated Chateau To Watch

St Emilion’s Chateau Troplong Mondot has hit all the right notes in recent years. The appointment of Aymeric de Gironde (formerly of Cos d’Estournel) as Managing Director in 2017 marked a step-change in the style and direction of its wines, revitalising the chateau and winning it a new army of fans.

Troplong Mondot has a long history. It was once part of a larger property that included Chateau Pavie and has changed hands a few times over the years. Since 2017, it has been owned by the SCOR insurance company and has gone from strength to strength.

A series of changes and a new winery have breathed new life into this Bordeaux estate and astonished the critics and merchants alike. This is very much a chateau to watch.

Troplong Mondot is the Grand Vin. Around 25% of production goes into the second wine, Mondot.

A New Focus On Finesse

Troplong Mondot sits on an excellent terroir. It is planted with 85% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Sauvignon and a touch of Cabernet Franc. Here, a combination of high elevation (for Bordeaux), which gives a slightly cooler micro-climate, and deep clay soils means immense potential.

For many years, the style was bombastic, high-octane and massive; this was St Emilion at its most turbocharged. Troplong Mondot has, however, recently moved to be more in line with the modern palate.

Immediate changes made by Aymeric were earlier picking and more gentle extractions. Starting with the 2018, this has resulted in more balanced, nuanced and layered wines. There’s still plenty of power thanks to the clay soils and naturally long growing season, but it’s perfectly harnessed. The oak is more integrated and the wine more complete.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 91

The 2021 Mondot is a bright, vibrant wine. Crushed flowers, red cherry fruit, orange peel, mint and white pepper abound. A wine of crystalline energy and tension, the 2021 is super-impressive in this tasting. Even so, it comes across a touch reticent and still recovering from bottle shock. [Antonio Galloni, 27/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2033

Neal Martin 88

The 2021 Mondot comes from the newly purchased vineyards, not permitted to be absorbed into the Grand Vin until the next classification. It has a fragrant bouquet with red cherry, strawberry pastille and just a touch of iodine. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly chocolate-tinged entry, quite spicy and chalky toward the finish. Fine. [Neal Martin, 22/02/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2026-2036
