Domaine Denis Bachelet: A Cult Gevrey-Chambertin Estate

Operating out of modest, quiet cellars in the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, Domaine Denis Bachelet is a benchmark micro-estate commanding a reputation that far exceeds its small physical footprint. Denis Bachelet took direct control of the family patrimony in 1983, gradually revitalising the property and expanding it to its current size of just over four hectares. Today, Denis works alongside his son, Nicolas Bachelet, maintaining a deeply focused, artisanal operation. The estate is characterised by its exceptionally high average vine age and an adherence to lutte raisonnée, a sustainable, non-interventionalist viticultural system that prioritises microbial soil health and ecosystem biodiversity to allow the vines to flourish naturally.

The Pure, Finesse-Driven Style of Pinot Noir Of Denis Bachelet

The overarching winemaking philosophy at Domaine Denis Bachelet centres on finesse. The Bachelets craft Pinot Noirs defined by their purity, seamless texture, and understated power. The hand-harvested grapes are completely destemmed and lightly crushed before undergoing a cool pre-fermentation maceration to gently extract colour and precise aromatics. Ageing takes place over 16 to 18 months, with a highly disciplined approach to new French oak, typically limited to one-third for the village wines and 50% for the crus, to ensure the wood frames the fruit rather than dominating it.

Ancient Vines and Rare Grand Cru Quality

The rare quality and strict allocation of Domaine Denis Bachelet wines are a direct consequence of the estate’s remarkable old-vine material, which yields small, intensely concentrated berries. The crown jewel of the portfolio is a microscopic 0.43-hectare parcel within the Grand Cru Charmes-Chambertin, featuring prized centenarian vines planted between 1907 and 1917. This is complemented by the Premier Cru Gevrey-Chambertin Les Corbeaux and a highly sought-after Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes village blend. Known for their liquid-silk texture, vibrant acidity, and detailed mineral notes, these scarce Burgundies possess structural integrity that allows them to age gracefully for decades in the cellars of fine wine collectors.
