Chateau Margaux: The Musigny Of Bordeaux
While Lafite is characterised by elegance and sophistication, Latour by brooding power and Mouton by flamboyance and exuberance. The First Growth of Chateau Margaux is defined by its incredible perfumed aromatics and sense of weightless power. It is the proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove that, for some, bears comparison with the Grand Cru of Musigny.
The second wine, Pavillon Rouge de Ch Margaux, is a small production gem, and the rare white, Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux, is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting white wines.
Chateau Margaux: An Iron Fist in A Velvet Glove
The eponymous estate of its appellation, Chateau Margaux, sits on a tremendous terroir of deep gravel that is perfectly suited to the Cabernet Sauvignon, which makes up 75% of the vines. The rest is made up of 20% Merlot with a touch of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Pockets of clay and limestone covered by gravel create a unique profile, and the soaring aromatics and beguiling mid-weight texture that are Chateau Margaux’s calling cards. There’s an uncommon delicacy to match the immense quality in Chateau Margaux that sets it apart from its peers.
Pavillon Blanc de Ch Margaux: A Sensational White
The Pavillon Blanc de Chateau Margaux is a fantastic white. White wines have long been grown at the estate. In recent years, the white has been taken ever more seriously, and quality has jumped. A wine of opulence and weight, this is a wine that rivals the great dry whites of Pessac. However, with production generally sub 1,000 cases, there isn’t very much to go around.

The 2023 Chateau Margaux is a delicate, beguiling wine. Floral aromatics make a strong first impression. A wine of nuance and understatement, the Margaux Grand Vin is light on its feet, with sublime balance and tons of class. This has closed down quite a bit since I tasted it from barrel, but that is not especially surprising. Readers will find a super-classic Grand Vin-a Margaux that is exactly as it should be.

The 2023 Chateau Margaux, which was bottled at the beginning of July, is a supremely gifted wine for the vintage. It unfolds in the glass with precise, quite mineral-driven black cherry and blueberry fruit, the patina of new oak suggesting it will require six or seven years in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with a satin-like texture that lends this First Growth weightlessness, yet paradoxically, there is still impressive concentration and persistence. This was so seductive in barrel and it has lost none of that in bottle.

The 2023 Chateau Margaux shows considerable promise, unfurling in the glass with aromas of cassis, violets, spring flowers and sweet tobacco, framed by a deft touch of new oak. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s taut, concentrated and classically structured, with sweet, refined tannins and lively acids, concluding with a long, mouthwatering finish. It’s a blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot that attained 13% alcohol.

89% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sweet, scented fruit, bolstered by some oak sweetness. Extremely fine and delicate texture with a structure that sits in the baclground until you notie the acidity singing through and feel the tensile tannin framework on the finish. Perfumed and aromatic through the mid-palate. Exquisite balance and finesse.
