Le Pin: Tiny Production, Ultra-Collectable Pomerol

Since its inception in 1979, Pomerol’s Le Pin has risen to become one of Bordeaux’s most exclusive, desirable and expensive wines. Named after a lone pine tree that sits outside the winery, it is minuscule in production at just 600 cases or so in a typical vintage and immense in quality. Allocations are some of the region’s most fiercely fought over and cherished.

Le Pin: Opulence, Decadence and Luxury

The unique terroir here at this tiny patch of Pomerol is responsible for Le Pin’s opulent and hedonistic style. The Grand Vin comes from a tiny, 2.8ha plot of Merlot that sits on deep gravel and iron-rich clay. Under the brilliant perfectionist owner Jacques Thienpont, who has a relentless and exacting drive for quality, the wines from here are consistently outstanding.

L’If and L’Hetre: Two Gems From The Same Superb Stable

While the price of Le Pin puts it out of the reach of many, there are options for those who want an insight into the winemaking here at a fraction of the price. Chateau L’If is a project of the Thienpont’s from St Emilion and is excellent. Chateau L’Hetre comes from vines in the Cotes de Bordeaux and is an outright bargain. Both are made by the same team and with the same level of care and expertise as the Grand Vin. They are well worth snapping up as they are relative bargains.

Antonio Galloni 99

The 2023 Le Pin is one of the wines of the vintage. It starts and ends there. Seamless, silky and remarkably pure, the 2023 is off-the-charts gorgeous. Everything is in perfect balance. The 2023 is not an especially opulent or dense Le Pin, rather it is a wine of remarkable completeness. Floral overtones, bright fruit and mid-weight structure are the signatures, and yet the 2023 has gorgeous mid-palate pliancy and the most cashmere-like tannins imaginable. Yields came in at a generous 39 hectoliters per hectare. New oak was 67%, a reduction from the 100% that was the norm a few years ago. [Antonio Galloni, 31/03/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2063

Neal Martin 97

The 2023 Le Pin was bottled in early June after aging in two-thirds new oak with racking every four months, with no collage. Nature gave us the balance, remarked Guillaume Thienpont. It has a very well-defined and very pure bouquet that blossoms in the glass, black fruit, hints of dark chocolate manifesting with aeration. This is beautifully balanced, with a sensually creamy texture that just glides across the mouth. Very well-defined, lovely poise with impressive depth toward the finish, this a gorgeous Le Pin. Very persistent in the mouth, superb. [Interestingly, a decanted bottle demonstrated a tad more precision and race on the finish.] [Neal Martin, 18/02/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2029-2050

vinum 99

Sweet and curranty but also a savoury note. Some coffee bean tones. A whisper of wood but most of the smoke tones are fruit / terroir rather than barrel–derived. More tactile than the slightly academic / clinical 2022. [Matthew Hemming, 01/03/2025]

Wine Advocate 94-96

The 2023 Le Pin is another strong effort for this small Pomerol winery, wafting from the glass with aromas of wild berries, violets, exotic spices and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, polished and suave, it’s velvety and refined, with attractive purity of fruit, lively acids and a long, gently vanillin-inflected finish. It’s the result of multiple harvests, starting with young vines, between September 11 and 23. [William Kelley, 26/04/2024]
