Ornellaia: A Bolgheri Super-Tuscan Pioneer

Situated along the sun-drenched Tuscan coast, Ornellaia is one of the most prestigious, influential, and globally celebrated estates in Italy. Founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori, the property was established in the unique maritime microclimate of Bolgheri with the explicit goal of crafting world-class Bordeaux-style blends capable of rivalling the finest estates of the Left Bank.

Ornellaia rose to international prominence under a succession of legendary winemakers, including Tibor Gál and Michel Rolland, and was eventually acquired through a historic partnership by the Frescobaldi family, who maintain its uncompromising standards today. Spanning roughly 115 hectares of complex soils composed of marine sediment, alluvial clay, and volcanic rock, the estate remains an institutional benchmark for Italian luxury wine.

The Mythical Grandeur of Masseto

The absolute pinnacle of the estate’s lineage, and an object of singular obsession for fine wine collectors globally, is the legendary Masseto. Born from a contiguous, 7-hectare hilltop vineyard characterised by rare, Pliocene-era blue clay soils (similar to those found at Petrus), Masseto was originally conceived as a daring viticultural gamble. Unlike the main estate blend, Masseto is crafted from 100% Merlot, yielding an opulent, monolithic masterpiece that operates entirely in its own stylistic stratosphere.

In the state-of-the-art, gravity-fed Masseto cellar, the fruit undergoes meticulous parcel-by-parcel vinification before ageing for up to two years in 100% new French oak barriques. The resulting wine is celebrated for its breathtaking concentration, silken texture, and a hauntingly complex aromatic profile of dark cacao, black truffles, and spice that demands decades of cellaring and can rival the great wines of Pomerol in quality. 

A Style of Mediterranean Opulence and Structural Precision

The overarching winemaking style of the flagship Ornellaia Grand Vin combines intense Mediterranean ripeness with a sleek, aristocratic structural framework. The classic blend is dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, expertly supported by Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot, with each distinct vineyard parcel vinified separately in temperature-controlled steel and concrete vats. The wine is subsequently aged for roughly 18 months in French oak barriques (70% new) before final blending. This precise approach yields a wine of immense multi-layered depth, balancing rich notes of blackcurrant, cedar, and wild herbs with a vibrant, sea-breeze acidity and remarkably polished, fine-grained tannins.
