Petrus: Luxury, Exclusivity and Quality

Pomerol’s Petrus is one of the world’s great wines. A name that stands for all that is luxurious and exclusive, allocations are highly prized and back-vintages are absolute treasures. Its inclusion is the hallmark of a truly world-class cellar.

Made in limited amounts from a fabulous terroir, Petrus is an icon and a benchmark for both the Pomerol appellation and Bordeaux itself.

Petrus has a long history, but soared in the latter half of the 20th Century to its current position at the very top of the fine wine tree and perhaps the most famous of all fine wines.

What Makes Petrus So Special?

The reputation of Petrus is built on this peerless quality. Petrus is a wine known for its extraordinary richness, power, concentration, and complexity.

The vineyard of Petrus covers 11.4 hectares in Pomerol, and 100% Merlot. The soil is composed of a unique and ancient sticky blue clay that is only found here. This clay is excellent for water retention, allowing the vines to cope well with any summer heat. They also give the wine its distinctive power and opulence that is delivered in a measured and sophisticated style. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some of them are over 100 years old. This adds extra concentration, complexity and nuance.

These vines yield just 2,500 cases in a typical vintage, and they could be sold many times over, such is the demand.

Jane Anson sums up the style of Petrus nicely. “It combines wonderful aromatic persistency with waves of flavour.” Importantly, however, “what Petrus has over many other great Bordeaux is this simple pleasure at the same time – a seductive texture that is, well, just so simply enjoyable”. It is this that has made Petrus so beloved.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 97

The 2023 Petrus turned out even better than I expected. Silky and elegant, the 2023 is a Petrus of delicacy and understatement more than power. Blackberry, lavender, mocha, dried herbs and crushed flowers all grace the palate. Refined tannins frame the captivating mid-palate and finish. Sublime. [Antonio Galloni, 31/03/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2063

Neal Martin 96

The 2023 Petrus was bottled last May. This has a delightful nose, not powerful, not intense, but it is beautifully defined with blackberry, raspberry, subtle floral scents of violet and iris, hints of black truffle in the background. It gains a little intensity with time in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins. Quite deep for the vintage. You would think there was some Cabernet Franc in the blend (you have to wait for 2025 for that). Quite linear in style, beautifully defined. Silky smooth on the finish that has the symmetry of a great Pomerol and an exquisite Petrus. [Neal Martin, 01/02/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2028-2055

Wine Advocate 97-99

The 2023 Petrus reveals a fresh, perfumed bouquet of raspberries, cassis, iris and violet mingled with hints of spices, followed by a full-bodied, layered and textural palate with a deep core of pure, crystalline fruit framed by exquisitely sweet structuring tannins. Concluding with an ethereal, resonant finish, it represents a singular interpretation of this estate in a more tensile, ethereal style, and it’s all the more compelling for that. This year, Olivier Berrouet minimized pumping over to avoid over-extracting, thereby preserving ultra-refined tannins. The harvest, conducted between September 11 and 20, brought in the Merlot grapes at their optimal maturity. As usual, it will mature 50% in new oak. [Yohan Castaing, 26/04/2024]

Anticipated maturity: 2025-2065
