Arnaud Mortet: An Overview

Established with the 2016 vintage, Domaine Arnaud Mortet represents a compelling, contemporary chapter in the viticultural legacy of Gevrey-Chambertin. Arnaud Mortet, the highly regarded vigneron directing his family’s iconic estate, Domaine Denis Mortet, launched this namesake project alongside his sister, Clémence. The opportunity arose when a retiring local grower passed the farming management of a prime four-hectare estate over to them. While technically classified as a négociant operation due to the leasing structure, the property functions entirely as an estate domain in practice. Arnaud and his dedicated vineyard team retain absolute, year-round control over the agricultural choices and vinification, applying the same exacting standards to these plots as they do to their historic family land.

An Evolved Style of Purity and Chiselled Structure

The winemaking style of Domaine Arnaud Mortet reflects a thoughtful evolution away from the dense extraction and heavy oak parameters popular in the late 20th century, favouring a model of elegance, energy, and chiselled precision. Sourced largely from old-vine plots averaging over 50 years of age, the fruit naturally possesses excellent concentration. In the cellar, Arnaud employs a highly disciplined, low-intervention approach that includes a strict triple sorting table and a significantly reduced percentage of new French oak. Whole-cluster inclusion is utilised selectively based on vintage conditions, sometimes involving the labour-intensive practice of clipping out the main structural stem by hand. The resulting Pinot Noirs balance a supple, sensual mid-palate texture with high-toned floral aromatics and a driving, mineral-rich core.

Exceptional Quality and Historic Appellation Diversity

The exceptional quality defining Arnaud Mortet stems from the immaculate pedigree of the leased parcels, which sit in some of Gevrey-Chambertin’s most expressive locations. The portfolio offers fine wine collectors a diverse range of terroirs, headlined by the village-level Gevrey-Chambertin “Ma Cuvée” and the ancient vines of the “Cuvée de Très Vieilles Vignes.” This foundation climbs into premier cru heights with acclaimed parcels in La Perrière and Lavaux Saint-Jacques, culminating in elite Grand Cru vines within Charmes-Chambertin and Mazoyères-Chambertin. By prioritising low yields and non-interventionalist viticulture, the estate delivers remarkable stylistic consistency across varying vintages. These highly allocated, structural wines offer profound cellaring potential, built to unfurl layers of earth, dark spice, and savoury nuance over decades.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 91-93

The 2024 Gevrey-Chambertin La Perriere 1er Cru uses 50-60% whole bunch this year. There is some reduction on the nose here that makes it difficult to read. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite structured with firm tannins and touches of graphite and bay leaf infusing the red fruit on the finish. This will require a couple of years in bottle. [Neal Martin, 01/01/2026]

JancisRobinson.com 16.5++

Cask sample. Bright mid-to-pale ruby. And here, the authority and individuality of a premier cru. Bright red fruits, cherries, strawberries, damsons. Rich mouthfeel and good texture. Much more personality than the blended premier cru Gevrey. Fine tannins and a little extra punch. A real step up. (MH)
