Pomerol’s Petrus is one of the world’s great wines. A name that stands for all that is luxurious and exclusive, allocations are highly prized and back-vintages are absolute treasures. Its inclusion is the hallmark of a truly world-class cellar.

Made in limited amounts from a fabulous terroir, Petrus is an icon and a benchmark for both the Pomerol appellation and Bordeaux itself.

Petrus has a long history, but soared in the latter half of the 20th Century to its current position at the very top of the fine wine tree and perhaps the most famous of all fine wines.

What Makes Petrus So Special?

The reputation of Petrus is built on this peerless quality. Petrus is a wine known for its extraordinary richness, power, concentration, and complexity.

The vineyard of Petrus covers 11.4 hectares in Pomerol, and 100% Merlot. The soil is composed of a unique and ancient sticky blue clay that is only found here. This clay is excellent for water retention, allowing the vines to cope well with any summer heat. They also give the wine its distinctive power and opulence that is delivered in a measured and sophisticated style. The average age of the vines is 45 years, and some of them are over 100 years old. This adds extra concentration, complexity and nuance.

These vines yield just 2,500 cases in a typical vintage, and they could be sold many times over, such is the demand.

Jane Anson sums up the style of Petrus nicely. “It combines wonderful aromatic persistency with waves of flavour.” Importantly, however, “what Petrus has over many other great Bordeaux is this simple pleasure at the same time – a seductive texture that is, well, just so simply enjoyable”. It is this that has made Petrus so beloved.
