Chateau Haut Bailly – Effortlessly Outstanding
Chateau Haut Bailly is one of Pessac-Leognan’s, and Bordeaux’s, rising stars. A producer of immaculate, and very fairly-priced, wine. This is a chateau to watch.
The estate has a long history, dating back to the 16th century and has changed hands several times over the years. In 1998 it was bought by the American Robert G Wilmers and huge inward investment followed. Since then, quality has soared with Haut Bailly returned to former glory.
The Grand Vin is excellent. The second wine, Haut Bailly II (previously Le Parde de Haut Bailly) comes from younger vines on the same soils and terroir as its big brother and is made by the same excellent team. As a more forward window into the house style, it is excellent to drink while waiting for the Grand Vin to come round.
Elegance, Purity, Complexity and Richness:
The Haut Bailly estate covers 30 hectares of vineyards. They are planted with around 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the balance made up of Merlot (34%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (3%). The soil is composed of gravel, sand, and clay. This gives Haut Bailly’s wines minerality and complexity. The vineyards are farmed organically, with minimal intervention and respect for the environment.
Chateau Haut Bailly is revered for its purity, finesse and elegance while still being richly fruited and complex. There is an effortless charm about Haut Bailly. As Jane Anson writes, “it manages to impress – even bowl over – those who drink it, without ever seeming to try too hard”. Haut Bailly is seriously impressive, superbly made and oozes quality.

Neal Martin 96-98
The 2025 Haut-Bailly was picked between September 4 and 22 at 26.6 hl/ha, raised in 50% new oak. Similar to elsewhere this year, I found a distinct difference between the Grand and Deuxieme Vins, this possessing greater delineation and complexity. A mixture of brambly red fruit, briar, a touch of cassis and orange rind that is beautifully delineated. The palate is exquisite: very fine tannins, tangible mineralite, very cohesive and focused, with a very complex, peppery finish that goes on and on and on. Svelte, harmonious and tender, this ranks amongst the best vintages from Haut-Bailly in recent years.

The 2025 Haut-Bailly is fabulous. Here, too, the purity of the fruit is remarkable. Dried herbs, crushed flowers, blood orange, pomegranate, mint and star anise give the 2025 a gorgeous and palpable sense of exoticism. The 2025 impresses with its elegance and finesse. Floral and savory overtones linger on the clean, supremely polished finish. Very fine.
