Chateau Conseillante – A Pomerol Benchmark

Chateau Conseillante of Pomerol is one of Bordeaux’s most popular and collectable fine wines. Opulent and velvety, while still elegant, sophisticated, and intellectual, it is one of the appellation’s reference points.

This is an historic estate, named after the 18th century owner, Catherine Conseillan. It stayed in her family until being bought by the Nicolas family, who remain in charge today.

The first wine makes up around 70% of the chateau’s output, with the remaining 30% going into the excellent value second wine, Duo de Conseillante.

Conseillante: Like Liquid Velvet

Conseillante sits on a fantastic terroir of well-draining gravel and clay. All of this sits above a sub-soil of iron-rich clay. This combination gives Conseillante its trademark richness balanced by fine minerality. Plantings are split between 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc.

Conseillante’s style has won it an army of fans. Expect complex and ethereal aromatics on the nose, then a silky and satin textured on the palate. This is Pomerol at its most luxurious and intoxicating. It is also extremely consistent as well as being fairly priced for the quality in the bottle and cachet of the label. Allocations on release are among Bordeaux’s most prized.

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 La Conseillante was cropped at 30 hl/ha and is matured in 70% new oak barrels, there are no amphoras this year as Marielle Cazaux felt the wine needed the micro-oxygenation. It has a very pure nose with black cherries, blueberry and wild strawberry fruit, just a little Burgundy-like in style. A hint of orange rind loiters in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with filigree tannins, a silver thread of acidity, quite linear and strict on the entry, gentle grip with a dash of black pepper towards the finish. A second glass that happened to have been opened for an hour revealed some of its opulence that will surely be enhanced during the elevage. It will deserve four to five years in bottle but will have a long life ahead and will give a lot of pleasure. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2055

Antonio Galloni 96-98

The 2025 La Conseillante is shaping up to be magnificent. Rich and luscious in the glass, the 2025 offers up an exotic melange of inky dark fruit, cloves, new leather, licorice and mocha. This is the first vintage that sees the return of Cabernet Sauvignon, historically a part of the blend from at least 1871 to 1956, when frost devastated many vineyards in Pomerol. The 2025 is impressively deep, but also quite vibrant. I can’t wait to see how it ages. It’s a superb effort from Technical Director Marielle Cazaux and her team. Cazaux made an immediate impact when she arrived in 2015, starting with a move to lower-intervention farming that was immediately apparent. I will have more to say about that and other related subjects in a separate article we will publish later in the year. Tasted two times. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

87% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Franc, 3% Cabernet Sauvignon. Cask sample.Mid purplish crimson. Pure cassis as well as a delightful lift of red cherries. Incredibly smooth, chocolate-textured tannins and balanced by just the right amount of freshness. Elegant even in youth and with the balance to age well. More and more red-fruited as it opens in the glass. Mouth-watering. (JH) [12/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2045
