Chateau Leoville Barton: Traditional Bordeaux At Its Best

Chateau Leoville Barton of St Julien is one of Bordeaux’s most popular wine producers. A Second Growth estate, it produces classically styled and immensely age-worthy wines that are cherished by collectors for their quality and value.

The estate was part of a larger ‘Leoville’ property until 1926 when it was bought by an Irish wine merchant, Hugh Barton. It remains in the same family today, with the charismatic Anthony Barton managing the property for decades from 1983. Today, family members Lilian, Melanie and Damien Barton Sartorius remain active in the running of the winery.

Around 75% of production goes into the famous Grand Vin. The remaining 25% of mostly younger vines, goes into the second wine, La Reserve de Barton. It gives a good window into the house style in a more early-drinking and accessible package.

Old School, Age-worthy and Structured:

The vineyards cover 50 hectares and are planted with around 73% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and a touch of Petit Verdot. Gravel, sand and clay make up the terroir and help to give Leoville Barton its trademark structure.

Chateau Leoville Barton is one of the most traditional and ‘old style’ Bordeaux wines on the market. The edges might have softened slightly in recent years, but this is claret built for the long haul and drinkers with sophisticated palates and plenty of patience.

Expect a wealth of acidity and firmly structured tannins in its youth. With age, these balance out and resolve, leaving a wine of complexity, class and charm. Classic Left Bank of Bordeaux notes of cassis, cedar, tobacco and graphite, medium weight and plenty of quality.

Antonio Galloni 94-96

The 2025 Leoville Barton is one of my early favorites of the vintage. It carries all the textural intensity and richness of a vintage with paltry yields. As such, it is not an especially classic Leoville Barton, but it is undeniably gorgeous. Black fruit, gravel, chocolate, new leather and licorice add to an impression of gravitas. As always, there’s a healthy amount of press wine in the blend. Readers will have to be patient with the 2025, but there’s a lot of potential. Tasted two times. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 Leoville Barton was picked between 4 September and 18 September and matured in 60% new oak barrels. This has an exquisite bouquet already, with ebullient blackberry and bilberry scents, beautifully integrated oak, keeping the DNA of Leoville Barton despite the warm summer. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, gentle grip, very pure fruit and a "cool" and focused finish. With lower alcohol, between 13.0 and 13.5%, the terroir really shows through here. Superb. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2034-2055

JancisRobinson.com 17+

86% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc. Cask sample.Slightly reticent, dark-fruit nose. Layered fruit on the palate with firm, ripe tannins behind. Oak still present so still embryonic and not fully knit but clear potential. (JL) [17/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2050
