Chateau Leoville Poyferre: A Hedonist’s Bordeaux

The St Julian Second Growth estate of Chateau Leoville Poyferre is one of Bordeaux’s most popular fine wine producers. Famed for its luxurious opulence and flamboyance, this is a chateau that has an army of fans thanks to its charming upfront style.

Leoville Poyferre has a long history. It was once part of the large Leoville estate and separated from Leoville Las Cases in 1840. It has been in the same hands since 1920, the Cuvelier family. Constant improvement in winery and vineyards in recent decades has ensured consistent quality from this excellent producer.

Around 55% of production goes into the Grand Vin. The remainder goes into the excellent second wine, Pavillon de Poyferre. The latter is excellent and great value, especially when from top Bordeaux vintages.

Flamboyant and Voluptuous Bordeaux

The vineyards that make up Chateau Leoville Poyferre are spread across St Julien. This gives it a complex and varied terroir with gravel, clay and sand all exerting their influence. Plantings are 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 23% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.

This relatively high proportion of Merlot for a Left Bank Bordeaux red gives Leoville Poyferre its signature profile. Full-bodied and impressive in the glass, Leoville Poyferre is one of the Left Bank’s most expressive, exuberant and upfront wines. Packed with juicy fruit balanced by plenty of acidity and tannin, this is claret for the true hedonist.

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 94-96

The 2025 Leoville-Poyferre is gorgeous. Rich and juicy, with striking mid-palate pliancy, the Grand Vin shows the vintage at its finest. That is immediately evident in its plush contours and impeccable balance. Dark red/purplish fruit, rose petal, lavender, menthol and mocha flesh out in the glass, filling out the layers effortlessly. The 2025 is a sensual Grand Vin. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 Leoville-Poyferre was picked from September 8 to 23 at just 20.3 hl/ha, undergoing a six-day cold pre-fermentation maceration and matured in 80% new oak. This is quintessential Poyferre on the nose, quite sensual and pure in style, with layers of ripe black fruit, black plum, a hint of camphor and violet. Wonderful delineation. The palate is framed by fine tannins, beautifully balanced, again quite minerally in style, with a precise and persistent graphite-tinged finish. If you love Poyferre, then you are going to adore this. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2032-2060

Mainly Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot plus smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Cask sample.Deep crimson with purplish rim. Relatively subdued first impression, deep and dark. Both black and blue fruit, so intense it is subdued, and a touch of something floral, a sort of violet sweetness. Extremely compact, refined tannins. Too smooth to be described as chewy but there is so much density here. Not as accessible as some in this vintage but the fruit is rich enough to wait for the tannins. Acidity less noticeable than on the Lagrange just tasted but it is all in harmony for a very long life. (JH) [12/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2055
