Producer Profile

Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion:

Based in Pessac right on the edge of the City Of Bordeaux itself, Chateau Les Carmes Haut Brion is a rising star of the Left Bank.

The property has a long history, but it has surged in recent years in quality and recognition. The rise in quality in combination with relatively small production and reasonable pricing means that Carmes has become one of the region’s hottest tickets with allocations fiercely fought-over each En Primeur season.

Les Carmes Haut Brion is the Grand Vin. The second wine, Le C des Carmes Haut Brion is excellent and provides and accessible and affordable window into what is one of Bordeaux’s most exciting producers.

Elegance, Panache and Plenty of Style:

Les Carmes Haut Brion is superbly located just a stone’s throw from the First Growth of Haut Brion itself. Its proximity to the suburbs of Bordeaux creates something of a micro-climate.  There is a touch more warmth than many in the appellation might receive and this means superbly ripe grapes.

The vineyard covers 29 hectares and is planted with 41% Cabernet Franc, 39% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is composed of gravel, sand, and clay, and provides good drainage and minerality.

The high proportion of Cabernet Franc in the blend, in combination with the terroir, makes Les Carmes Haut Brion one of the Left Bank’s most elegant and sophisticated wines.

The estate itself is as stunning as the wine. Philippe Starck designed unique winery was designed by to look like that of the hull of a ship. It was completed in time for the 2015 harvest. It sits above a state of the art barrel room that allows for total precision.

The wine has clearly benefitted from this investment as Les Carmes Haut Brion as recent vintages have been consistently exceptional.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96-98

The 2025 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is a huge, powerful wine that is going to need many years to come into its own. Dark red/purplish fruit, lavender, incense, melted road tar and licorice make a bold entrance. Fertility in the Merlots was low. As a result, the 2025 has the highest amount of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon ever, 83% in total as opposed to the more typical 70% or so. Whole clusters, always a part of the approach here, are 65%. Time on skins was 45 days at 27 C (80.6 F) compared to the 35 days at 30 C (86 F) that is more typical. Readers will find an especially deep, potent Carmes, a wine that will need the better part of a decade to shed some of its considerable baby fat. It’s a telling example of the vintage, with 1% less alcohol than in most recent years. Today the 2025 is a mere infant. It’s another exceptional wine from Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier and his team. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2075

Neal Martin 91-93

The 2025 Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 3 to 19, utilising 30% whole bunch and aged 25% in new barrels, 50% in 30hl foudres and 25% in clay and sandstone amphorae. This is very well defined on the nose, quite intense brambly red fruit laced with brown spices, hints of pencil box and some black olives. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant, fine tannins that support the slightly peppery red fruit, the stem influence subtle but slightly more pronounced towards the finish. Fine depth, sapid, moderate in terms of length, this will just require a couple of years in bottle before it is ready to go. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2048

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

54% Cabernet Franc, 29% Cabernet Sauvignon, 17% Merlot. 38 hl/ha. 65% whole bunch. Cask sample.Poised, precise and perfumed. Resonates with aromatic fruit on the palate. Lovely texture, the fine-grained tannins silky and fresh. A little sweetness of ripe fruit but the finish lively and long. (JL) [20/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2030-2050
