Château Pavie: A Saint-Émilion Titan

Situated on the historic slopes of the Right Bank, Château Pavie is one of the largest and most prestigious estates in Saint-Émilion. While the property’s viticultural history dates back to Roman times, its modern trajectory was radically redefined in 1998 when it was acquired by Gérard Perse. Perse implemented an extensive modernisation of both the vineyards and the winemaking facilities, a transformation that culminated in the estate’s promotion to the elite rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé “A” in 2012, a status reconfirmed in the 2022 classification. Today, the estate spans an impressive, contiguous 37 hectares, benefiting from a unique south-facing exposition that ensures optimal ripening for its complex blend of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

A Style of Uncompromising Power and Rich Density

The architectural hallmark of Château Pavie is its opulent, deeply concentrated, and structurally monumental style. Sourced from three distinct geological zones, including the limestone plateau, the clay-limestone slopes, and the sandy-clay foothills, the fruit naturally achieves exceptional phenolic maturity. In the cellar, the winemaking team utilises state-of-the-art, temperature-controlled wooden vats for a lengthy maceration and fermentation. The wine is subsequently aged for up to 24 months in 100% new French oak barrels. Rather than leaning toward a light or early-drinking profile, the estate crafts a bold, hedonistic Bordeaux characterised by dark fruit extraction, exotic spice notes, and a firm, fine-grained tannic backbone that provides immense structural support.

Regal Quality and Legendary Ageing Potential

The global market demand and blue-chip quality associated with Château Pavie are driven by rigorous vineyard management, including severe green harvesting and low yields that mirror those of Pomerol’s top micro-estates. This meticulous approach ensures that even in variable vintages, the estate delivers a wine of remarkable consistency and profound depth. Collectors prize the Grand Vin for its extraordinary cellaring potential; the initial monolithic power and rich oak integration of its youth gradually evolve over decades into a harmonious, multi-layered profile of truffles, cedar, and mineral complexity. This enduring consistency reinforces its position as an institutional benchmark for collectors of fine Right Bank Bordeaux. Learn more about Château Pavie

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96-98

The 2025 Pavie is a total stunner. What a wine. Rich and dazzling in its intensity, the 2025 hits all the right notes. Inky dark red/purplish fruit, exotic spice, mocha, espresso and pomegranate literally stain the palate. The 2025 is going to require the better part of a decade to unwind, but it has a ton of potential and a very bright future. This is the first time Cabernet Franc is the dominant variety in the Grand Vin. The 2025 has plenty of the textural intensity readers have come to expect, but with less of the heavy extraction that marked the earlier years. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Neal Martin 92-95

The 2025 Pavie was picked at just 21 hl/ha, the lowest ever, plus this is the first vintage with 60% Cabernet Franc from plantings in the 2000s. Matured in 65% new oak, the aromatics are far superior, more cohesive and purer than the Aromes cuvee. Still very plush and luxuriant, it has that purity, although it needs more delineation and terroir expression to come through. The palate is actually better than the nose and I appreciate the contribution that the Cabernet Franc makes in this wine, delivering fine structure and tension that I believe you would not have obtained if there were higher Merlot. Satisfying precision on the finish, this feels long in the mouth with cracked black pepper on the aftertaste. It is a different take on Pavie due to the different blend and if the aromatics can gain more complexity and nuance, then it could be an interesting proposition once in bottle. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

JancisRobinson.com 18.5

60% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. 21 hl/ha. Cask sample.Deep purple-black colour. Lots of Cabernet in the blend (a record for Cabernet Franc). Lovely fruit expression, the aromas pure and expressive. An abundance of tannin but sculpted and precise. Freshness from start to finish. Intense and profound. Long on the finish. Considerable ageing potential. (JL) [23/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2060
