Chateau Pichon Baron – Immaculate & Classic Pauillac

The Pauillac Second Growth estate of Chateau Pichon Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most prestigious fine wines. Powerful, structured and impressive, this is classic and immaculately presented Pauillac.

Picture perfect, the 19th-century chateau of Pichon Baron is one of Bordeaux’s most beautiful and most photographed buildings. Think of what the stereotypical chateau of Bordeaux looks like, and you’re probably thinking of something that looks like this.

It is managed by the excellent Christian Seely. Throughout his tenure, he has skilfully preserved the traditions and character of the house, while simultaneously modernising and improving it. Like many in Bordeaux, quality has soared here in recent years thanks to big inward investment, upgrades in the winery and ever more care in the vineyards. The result is one of the region’s most consistently impressive reds.

The Grand Vin makes up around 45% of production. The rest is split between two second wines. Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is a Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated blend, while Tourelles de Longueville has a higher proportion of Merlot.

Bold, muscular and extremely age-worthy.

Chateau Pichon Baron is superbly located over the road from Pichon Lalande and close to Chateau Latour. The vineyard covers 73 hectares, and is planted with 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It sits on clay, fine gravel and sandy gravel.

The style here is classic Pauillac. Bold, muscular and concentrated with powerful tannin and great ageing potential. Expect plenty of black fruit, cassis, cedar and tobacco on the nose, giving way to a full-bodied palate that demands plenty of time in bottle. With a few years, Pichon Baron becomes extremely rewarding as it develops complexity, nuance and balance.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96-98

Silky, aromatic and layered in the glass, the 2025 Pichon Baron is a total stunner. What a wine. Sweet red cherry/plum fruit, blood orange and rose petal are some of the many notes that caress the palate. Hints of pomegranate, mint and exotic spice appear later, adding layers of nuance. The wine’s striking mid-palate sweetness and overall balance are the stuff dreams are made of. This is exquisite. Yields were just 24 hectoliters per hectare. The 2025 is expected to spend 18 months in French oak, 70% new. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2065

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 Pichon Baron was picked over 16 days between September 8 and 24 at just 24 hl/ha, matured in 70% new oak. Like the Les Griffons, it has a subtle estuarine/sea spray element that intertwines with the melange of red and black fruit. The Merlot is actually more expressive than recent vintages. The palate is medium-bodied, with grainy tannins, lovely crispness and elegance, gaining depth as it moves into its final third. Slightly chalky tannins (a leitmotif of the vintage, especially in Pauillac), gentle grip, with an almost mellow finish, suggest that it might be earlier drinking than the 2019 or 2022. Superb. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2060

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot. 24 hl/ha. Cask sample.Classic in weight and style. Intense and floral on the nose, on the palate dark fruit and graphite. Tannins abundant but polished, the texture fine. Plenty of freshness. Powerful but refined. (JL) [14/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2034-2050
