Vieux Chateau Certan: Ethereal, Aromatic & Sublime

Vieux Chateau Certan (or VCC for short) is one of Pomerol’s elite producers. Elegant, aromatic and beautifully balanced, the wine from here can rival the very best of the appellation in terms of sheer quality. It’s a real connoisseur’s Bordeaux, in a sweet spot in terms of price-to-quality ratio.

The estate passed through several owners in the 18th and 19th centuries, until it was bought by Georges Thienpont in 1924. He was a Belgian wine merchant who also owned Chateau Troplong Mondot and Chateau Le Pin.

The estate remains in the Thienpont family to date, and is currently managed by Alexandre Thienpont, the grandson of Georges.

The Grand Vin is truly world-class. The second wine, La Gravette de Certan, is also superb and is made in the house style while being more open and accessible.

A Superb Terroir Between Petrus and Le Pin

The estate of Vieux Chateau Certan sits on a fabulous terroir that is between Petrus and Le Pin. It consists of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. The soil is mainly heavy clay and gravel, which provides good drainage and minerality. This combination gives the wine its phenomenal finesse, elegance, complexity, and ageing potential.

Attention to detail is second to none. In the vineyard, there is vine-by-vine care while vinification is gentle to allow the magnificence of the terroir to shine.

In style, Vieux Chateau Certan is silky-smooth, soaring and ethereal aromatics. Look for notes and aromas of trademark violets, plummy black fruits and truffle. It has a remarkable balance, structure, and length, and can age for decades. When at its peak, there are few more enjoyable wines than Vieux Chateau Certan made anywhere on the planet.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

Neal Martin 95-97

The 2025 Vieux Chateau Certan was picked from September 8 to 15 at 22 hl/ha and includes two conjoining parcels normally used for the La Gravette. It is raised in two-thirds new oak, the remainder one-year-old. The Merlot sculpts the bouquet with perfumed red cherries, raspberry, cassis and pressed violet scents that gain intensity in the glass. The oak is seamlessly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, with powdery tannins on the entry. This must be one of the most peppery VCCs that I have tasted, poivre noir from the Cabernet Franc component. Quite structured, with chalky tannins on the finish, almost as if it came from more limestone soil. Not a crowd pleaser like the 2022, but an intellectual, vertical VCC that will flesh out in barrel. 14.01% alcohol. [Neal Martin, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2033-2060

Antonio Galloni 93-96

The 2025 Vieux Chateau Certan is not in the mood to show all its cards. Today, the 2025 shows tons of textural richness and body, but not quite the delineation or energy of the best vintages. Black-toned fruit, gravel, incense, mocha and chocolate are generous in the glass. Ripeness feels pushed to the edge, with fruit perhaps picked a bit later than ideal. But this is a barrel sample, with the wine racked just three weeks prior to my visit. I won’t be surprised if this shows better from bottle, but today, this is my impression. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2075

JancisRobinson.com 17.5

80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 22 hl/ha. Cask sample.Fragrant and floral, the Cabernet amplifying the aroma. Tannins abundant but like cashmere in texture. Lively and invigorating with plenty of energy. (JL) [21/04/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2035-2055
