Jacques Selosse: A Champagne Revolutionary

Based in the Grand Cru village of Avize, Champagne Jacques Selosse is the undisputed catalyst for the modern “grower Champagne” movement. The house was established in 1949 by Jacques Selosse, but its contemporary icon status was entirely forged by his son, Anselme Selosse, who took control in 1980 after studying oenology in Burgundy.

Anselme shattered Champagne’s conventional industrial norms by declaring that a great sparkling wine must first be treated as a great still wine. He introduced radical concepts to the region, focusing intensely on low yields, physiological fruit ripeness, and site-specific terroir. Following decades of boundary-pushing mastery, Anselme passed the baton to his brilliant son, Guillaume Selosse, who has seamlessly maintained the domain’s legendary cult status across their micro-allocated 8.3 hectares of old-vine parcels.

A Vinous Style of Oxidative Mastery and Perpetual Reserves

The signature style of Jacques Selosse is immediately recognisable: it is deeply vinous, texturally voluptuous, deliberately oxidative, and driven by a piercing mineral focus. Eschewing the standard regional reliance on sterile stainless steel and heavy commercial dosages, the estate ferments and ages its base wines entirely in neutral French oak barrels using native yeasts.

Crucially, the domain employs a historic, multi-vintage perpetual reserve system (akin to a Sherry solera), where the oldest reserve wines “educate” the younger base vintages. The absolute apex of this method is found in their legendary Substance cuvée, a pure Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs aged across decades-old blending tiers. The resulting Champagnes show an amber hue, an incredibly fine bead, and layers of dried orchard fruit, orange oil, toasted brioche, and a striking, saline-chalk energy.

Incredible Rarity Across the Iconic Lieux-Dits

The global demand and blue-chip investment status surrounding Jacques Selosse are reinforced by a highly strict allocation framework. While the portfolio features foundational masterpieces like the multi-vineyard Initial, the zero-dosage Version Originale (V.O.), and a rare, structured Rosé, the ultimate treasures for collectors are the Lieux-Dits Collection. Launched in 2010, this series comprises six micro-production, single-parcel Champagnes that offer a pure masterclass in soil differentiation. This includes three benchmark Blanc de Blancs from the Côte des Blancs (including Les Carelles in Le Mesnil-sur-Oger) and three potent Blanc de Noirs from the Montagne de Reims (such as La Côte Faron in Aÿ). Produced in microscopic quantities, these profound bottles require years of patience to fully hit their stride, evolving gracefully into spectacular expressions of fine wine gastronomy.

Tasting Notes

Antonio Galloni 96

The NV (2016) Extra-Brut Substance is a wild, exotic Champagne. Tangerine peel, white flowers, candied citrus and spice fill out the layers. Hints of crystallized ginger and chamomile appear later. Ample and full-bodied, with tremendous energy, Substance is fabulous in this release. Bottled with no dosage. Disgorged: July 18, 2025. [Antonio Galloni, 31/05/2026]

Anticipated maturity: 2029-2039

Vinous 93+

Powerful, fine mousse Exotic, idiosyncratic, sinus-clearing nose combines poached pear, toffee, coffee, honeysuckle, loam and smoky, spicy oak. Dense, chewy and tactile in the mouth, with penetrating flavors of almost painful precision. Shows the classic exotic spicy, leesy character of this singular Champagne. At once very dry and impressively thick, and very long and youthful on the aftertaste. It would be a shame not to give a wine like this at least a few years of additional cellaring. [Stephen Tanzer, 11/01/2003]
