Opus One: A Global Fine Wine Superstar

If California had First Growths, the Napa Valley’s Opus One would certainly be one of them. A Cabernet Sauvignon that raised the bar and the global profile for fine Napa wine, Opus One is one of the most recognisable wines on the planet.

Opus One was founded as a joint venture between two of the great names in fine wine, one Old World and one New: Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild in Bordeaux, and Robert Mondavi of Napa. The idea was to fully utilise the potential of the superb terroirs of Napa and craft a Left-Bank Bordeaux-style blend with Napa Valley fruit. Effectively using the best of both worlds to result in something that is more than the sum of its parts.

Opus also produces a second wine, Overture. This is a unique multi-vintage Bordeaux blend.

Opus One: Old World Style and New World Flair

Hailing from prestigious Oakville, California, the signature wine, Opus One, is a red Bordeaux blend dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon, complemented by Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, and Malbec.

It is very true to its original vision in terms of style. While still very Napa in terms of exuberance on the nose and palate, Opus One is no Napa fruit bomb. It has plenty of fine acidity and tannic structure to balance the fruit. This means a classy and elegant take on Napa Cabernet.

As with the Bordeaux First Growths, production is by no means small. This makes the consistently excellent quality, vintage after vintage, all the more remarkable. Opus One is a phenomenally reliable benchmark and fully deserves its immense reputation.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

JancisRobinson.com 16.5

Full bottle 1,357 g. Not ridiculously heavy. 2021’s release of this non-vintage blend of ‘the five classic Bordeaux’s varieties and aged for 18 months in French oak’ based on the two very different vintages 2018 and 2017. ‘Overture is a true expression of Opus One’s estate vineyards’, we are assured. Bottle ID: Z359-A72C. Very dark – blackish – crimson with a pale rim. Mellow, ripe, utterly Napa Valley nose but without excessive concentration. Really delightful to drink now with some (but not excessive) sweetness, a bit of inkiness and mellow mulberry fruit. Long follow-through and the merest hint of rusty nails on the end – but nothing intrusive. Gorgeous up to the finish which is really rather sudden. Were it not for that I would have been tempted to give it 17. [17/08/2021]
