18 Delicious & Drinking Certan's! 2004 Vieux Chateau Certan & 1998 Certan de May

We are excited to present two legendary wines from Pomerol that are ready to be enjoyed now: Chateau Certan de May and Vieux Chateau Certan de May from the 1998 and 2004 vintages. Such finds are rare, considering Pomerol’s limited production – hence why we are delighted today to present an excellent quantity of these highly sought-after wines.

Vieux Chateau Certan 2004

Vieux Château Certan, established in 1858, underwent a reconstruction by Charles de Bousquet, resulting in a chateau distinguished by its remarkable architecture. Since its acquisition by the Thienpont family in 1924, the estate has been meticulously managed, upholding a legacy of winemaking excellence.

The 2004 Vieux Chateau Certan has garnered high praise from Neal Martin and Robert Parker, who describe it as something truly exceptional: producing one of the best Right Bank wines you will find…a very satisfying 2004 Pomerol that should give a couple of decade’s drinking pleasure & superb concentration and richness.”

Chateau Certan de May 1998

Meanwhile, Chateau Certan de May, with a heritage spanning several decades, is deeply rooted in its exceptional terroir and a dedication to crafting wines of rare elegance and refinement.

Recently, John Gilman had the opportunity to taste the 1998 and declares that it is still on the way up: “vies with the 1982 as the greatest wine made at this property in the last fifty years…A great vintage at Certan de May, which seems to have slipped back below the market’s radar a bit after the acclaim for the 1982 all those years ago…This gorgeous wine is certainly starting to be approachable today.”

As these neighbouring estates of Petrus, Lafleur-Petrus, La Conseillante, and L’Evangile are extremely popular, we recommend securing your case promptly! Please let us know if these are of interest by contacting your account manager or by simply clicking the “shop now” button.

1998 Chateau Certan de May
9 cases (x12) @ SGD$ 2,650/ case (inc GST $2,862)
“The 1998 Chateau Certan de May is a stellar young wine and probably vies with the 1982 as the greatest wine made at this property in the last fifty years. The bouquet is deep, precise and a beautifully classic expression of this unique terroir, soaring from the glass in a blend of cassis, sweet dark berries, tobacco leaf, dark soil tones, a touch of fresh herbs, cigar ash and cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and already beautifully plush on the attack, with a lovely core of fruit, excellent soil signature and grip, ripe tannins and a long, complex and perfectly balanced finish. A great vintage at Certan de May, which seems to have slipped back below the market’s radar a bit after the acclaim for the 1982 all those years ago. This gorgeous wine is certainly starting to be approachable today, but I would hesitate to open it now, as it is still very clearly in climbing mode and more bottle age will be richly rewarded.”

2004 Chateau Vieux Chateau Certan
9 cases (x12) @ SGD$ 3,500/ case (inc GST $3,780)
“The 2004 Vieux Château Certan is an important one in my opinion, since it is the first whereby Alexandre Thienpont surpasses the limitations of the growing season, producing one of the best Right Bank wines you will find. Now beginning to show signs of ageing on the rim, it has an intense, more Merlot driven bouquet with wild strawberry, black truffle, hints of burnt toast and truffle. The tannins appear to be softening on the palate that is not as concentrated as the 2005 or 2009 of course, but there is admirable body and density here with some sinew towards the finish that will mellow with time. The aftertaste offers hints of sage and rosemary, completely a very satisfying 2004 Pomerol that should give a couple of decade’s drinking pleasure.”
93 Points Neal Martin

“This stunning blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc boasts a dense ruby/purple color along with a big, sweet bouquet of black cherries, licorice, roasted herbs, smoke, and cassis. Elegant, medium to full-bodied, pure flavors reveal moderately high tannin, but superb concentration and richness. Vieux Chateau Certan should be one of the longer-lived and most complex wines of the vintage. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.”
93+ Points Robert Parker
