A 100-point vintage of Penfolds iconic Grange Shiraz launches today on La Place de Bordeaux,

Opus One 2023 is released today, earning 98 points from four critics: Wine Spectator, Decanter, Vinous and Jeb Dunnuck.

A Bordeaux blend grown across the estate's Oakville vineyards, the 2023 is described by Vinous as class personified, a super-classic Opus with lifted aromatics.

Founded in 1979 as a partnership between Baron Philippe de Rothschild and Robert Mondavi, Opus One remains one of the most collected wines to come out of Napa Valley.

Solaia 2023 was released yesterday, scoring 98 points from Decanter and 97 from Antonio Galloni.

An exceptional vintage for the Solaia vineyard: a cool, rainy spring built up strong water reserves in the soil, followed by a warm summer without excess heat, allowing the fruit to ripen slowly and evenly. Harvest ran into mid-October, closing with Cabernet Sauvignon on the 13th. The blend, 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Sangiovese and 10% Cabernet Franc, shows ripe wild berries, blackberry and blackcurrant, with plum, fig, pepper and liquorice. Silky tannins carry through to a long finish of bitter cocoa and coffee.

Château d'Yquem releases the 2024 Y today, the estate's dry white expression from the very same parcels and vines as the grand vin itself.

Made from a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Sémillon, picked before the onset of botrytis, Y combines the citrus precision of Sauvignon Blanc with the depth and concentration that comes from Sémillon, a singular style that none of Yquem's neighbours have successfully replicated.

Klein Constantia releases the 2023 vintage of the historic Vin de Constance today, and it's armed with a 100-point score from Jane Anson

Made from Muscat de Frontignan, hand-harvested across an extraordinary 25 passes through the vineyard, the 2023 shows layers of apricot puree, citrus, grilled pineapple, truffle and fennel, with the balance and grace that define this modern icon of the Cape. James Suckling and The Drinks Business have each scored it 98-99 points.

Masseto kicks off the September releases on La Place de Bordeaux today, with the 2023 vintage.

A demanding growing season in Bolgheri, marked by heavy spring rain and real mildew pressure, has produced a compelling expression of single-vineyard Merlot from the estate's signature blue clay: dark, meaty fruit, graphite minerality and that signature silky texture, it achieved scores of up to 99 points from the critics. This is the first vintage under winemaker Eleonora Marconi's sole direction.

Vinum is delighted to win Platt Vineyard for our portfolio of agency producers in Singapore

Planted in Sonoma's Freestone-Occidental hills by former HP CEO Lewis Platt, this small West Sonoma Coast site has quietly supplied fruit to California's most sought-after producers for two decades. Now under AXA Millesimes, with Thomas Rivers-Brown as consultant winemaker, it's bottling under its own label for the first time, including a Chardonnay rated 100/100 by Antonio Galloni.

Our resident Master of Wine, Matthew Hemming MW, has tasted through the debut releases and written up his full notes and scores.

Welcome to the August edition of the Vinum Weekender. As harvest gets underway early across the wine world, we have five pieces for you this month.

Matthew Hemming MW turns Wine Words detective on whole bunch fermentation, from Domaine Leroy's paler reds to the peppery lift in Château Rayas. We introduce Platt Vineyard, the new West Sonoma Coast icon founded by the late HP CEO Lewis Platt and now under AXA Millesimes - Matthew's verdict on the debut Reserve Chardonnay 2023: a remarkable 98 points. Miles Davis swaps tasting notes for hiking boots in Northern Portugal, tracing a family trip through the land of Vinho Verde. Chris Kelly previews the season's biggest names in our September Release Preview, from 2023 Opus One to the eagerly awaited 2016 Château Palmer, Masseto and Solaia. Finally, Miles takes stock of a scorching July in the market report, as record heat pushed harvests to their earliest ever start.

Last week, Chris and Miles from our UK office met with journalist Jason Millar over lunch at Lorne in Victoria. The 2018 Burlotto Aclivi, a blend of the estate’s finest crus across Verduno, was singing: perfumed and ethereal on the nose, with beautifully integrated tannins on the palate.

Alongside it, the Argiano 2016 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Suolo, sourced from vines averaging 55 years old, proved a lovely example of this great Tuscan vintage. Deep and brooding, and fascinating to taste alongside the Barolo.
