2020 L’Hêtre: 95/100 "I was blown away by the quality...

“I was blown away by the quality of the 2020 L’Hetre, and this estate, as well as the entire Castillon region, is one to watch going forward…”
– Jeb Dunnuck

Following the success of Le Pin in Pomerol and L’If in Saint-Émilion, Jacques Thienpont created L’Hêtre in the Castillon-Côtes-de-Bordeaux appellation in 2016.

Situated at the highest point of the Bordeaux vineyard, reaching an impressive altitude of 100 meters, the estate stands proudly at the end of the Saint Philippe d’Aiguilhe limestone plateau. The ten hectares of vineyards consist of meticulously cultivated Merlot and Cabernet Franc vines, planted on either the plateau or the clay-limestone slopes, all facing the southeast. To maintain the utmost respect for the environment, the estate practices organic viticulture.

L’Hêtre, the latest addition to this remarkable trilogy, takes its name from the majestic beech tree. From the moment the grapes are harvested, great care is taken throughout the vinification process. The berries undergo fermentation in both concrete and wooden vats, harmoniously combining traditional and modern winemaking techniques. The wine then matures for fifteen months in oak barrels, with one-third of them being new.

We are absolutely thrilled today to offer the 2020 vintage of L’Hetre that Jeb Dunnuck and Lisa Perrotti-Brown adore: “I was blown away by the quality…Perfectly balanced and incredibly elegant, with building yet fine tannins, drink this remarkable Castillon any time over the coming two decades.” & “framed by firm, grainy tannins and bright freshness, finishing long and minerally.”

These are in original case and offered in pristine condition as per the photo above. Please let us know if you would like a case of two secured by contacting your account manager or by simply clicking on the “Shop now” button.

“I was blown away by the quality of the 2020 L’Hetre, and this estate, as well as the entire Castillon region, is one to watch going forward. Based on 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, brought up in 30% new French oak, it has a ruby/purple hue as well as a classic limestone-influenced bouquet of black raspberries, chalky minerality, white truffle, and tobacco. Perfectly balanced and incredibly elegant, with building yet fine tannins, drink this remarkable Castillon any time over the coming two decades.”

95 Points Jeb Dunnuck

“L’Hetre 2020 is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, grown organically on 30 hectares in Castillon by Maxime Thienpont, the nephew of Jacques, with Axel Marchal as their consultant. The wine has been produced since 2016. The 2020 is deep garnet-purple in color and shoots from the glass with vibrant notes of wild blueberries, chocolate-covered cherries, and mulberries, leading to suggestions of star anise, black olives, and crushed rocks. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is completely coated with powerful black fruit and earthy flavors, framed by firm, grainy tannins and bright freshness, finishing long and minerally.”
