Outstanding 2021s from Domaine Follin-Arbelet

DOMAINE FOLLIN-ARBELET 2021

“Outstanding” Les Vercots 1er Cru “virtually always ages well, and this excellent example should as well” – Allen Meadows

“There is clearly plenty of energy here” Jasper Morris about the Romanée Saint-Vivant.

“Outstanding Top Value” – Allen Meadows on the Aloxe-Corton

Live from Domaine Follin-Arbelet, where the last barrels of the 2024 vintage are being filled, I’m excited to bring you a special offer showcasing their remarkable vintage 2021!

As I stood beside Simon, we discussed this unique vintage. After the warmth of 2018, 2019, and 2020, 2021 brought a refreshing change. The cooler year allowed the wines to develop a fresher and vibrant character. Fortunately, the domaine was spared from frost, thanks to their careful two-step late pruning. With the unusual circumstances of the Covid period, Simon had the opportunity to spend more time in the vineyard, where his passion truly lies, reconnecting with the land as a passionate farmer.

I am delighted today to present their 2021 range, from their “Outstanding Top Value” Aloxe-Corton to the structured and elegant Grand Crus. Follin-Arbelet wines have garnered lovely praise from critics. Neal Martin described the Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru as “very fine” while Allen Meadows noted that the Les Vercots 1er Cru is “Outstanding” and says “virtually always ages well, and this excellent example should as well,” awarding it 91-93 points.

For the Grands Crus, Meadows highlights the Corton’s “super-sleek and highly energetic medium-weight plus flavors, with excellent delineation and an abundance of minerality,” and the flagship Romanee St Vivant is always THE WINE with the best cellaring potential made from the highest pedigree vineyard.

I highly encourage you to secure a few bottles for your cellar while they’re still available!

With best wishes,
Manon

DOMAINE FOLLIN-ARBELET 2021

Aloxe-Corton
SGD $70 ($76.30 inc GST) per bottle – 24 bottles available
This is also aromatically ripe yet cool with its array of red and dark currant scents that exhibit more subtle earth influence. The sleeker and more energetic if less concentrated and powerful flavors possess a lovely texture while offering fine length on the youthfully austere finale. This is a very good Aloxe villages that should age well over the medium-term and is worth checking out.

Pernand-Vergelesses Les Fichots 1er Cru
SGD $70 ($76.30 inc GST) per bottle – 24 bottles available
Ripe yet cool aromas include those of various dark berries, earth and a touch of the sauvage. There is both good density and energy to the relatively robust medium weight flavors that flash good power and a touch of minerality on the attractively textured finish that displays on a hint of rusticity. Fichots almost always ages well and this example should be no exception.
90-92 points Allen Meadows

Aloxe-Corton 1er Cru Clos du Chapitre
SGD $85 ($92.65 inc GST) per bottle – 80 bottles available
The 2021 Aloxe-Corton Clos du Chapitre 1er Cru comes from a two-hectare plot shared with Génot-Boulanger in the center of the village. It has a well-defined bouquet with raspberry and briar scents, gaining intensity in the glass while maintaining admirable focus. The palate is well-balanced with sappy red fruit, a little rustic in style, edgy and spicier than the Village Cru with a sapid, briny finish. Very fine.

Aloxe Corton Les Vercots 1er Cru
SGD $85 ($92.65 inc GST) per bottle – 80 bottles available
A very pretty, indeed perfumed, nose speaks of various red berries, floral and discreet spice nuances. The succulent and round medium weight flavors also possess a lovely texture along with good underlying tension before culminating in a balanced and even firmer finale. Les Vercots virtually always ages well and this excellent example should as well.
91-93 points “Outstanding” Allen Meadows

Corton Grand Cru
SGD $165 ($179.85 inc GST) per bottle – 48 bottles available
**Maximum of 6 bottles per client**
Here the wood is less subtle though it stops short of being invasive on the ripe, brooding and layered nose of various dark berries, forest floor, game and smoky hints. The super-sleek and highly energetic medium weight plus flavors possess excellent delineation and an abundance of minerality that comes to the fore on the dusty, moderately austere and sneaky long finale that is more structured still. While this possesses very fine development potential, it will need at least 5 to 7 years first as it’s presently quite tightly wound.

Romanée St-Vivant Grand Cru
SGD $640 ($697.60 inc GST) per bottle – 18 bottles available
**Maximum of 3 bottles per client**
The Follins pick the grapes for their cousins at Domaine Poiset, who then vinify the wine and sell some back to Follin-Arbelet. Vibrant rich purple. There is clearly plenty of energy here but it is hard to see the detail. There is rich deep raspberry juice behind, slightly monolithic today though that is more a question of youth than lack of class. Drink from 2027-2033. Tasted: October 2022.
