Château Latour is one of the oldest and most iconic Châteaux in the Médoc, established in 1680. The Enclos, a central plot in the Cru Classé of Pauillac, is home to old vines that are meticulously cared for and used to produce the grand vin. While the grapes composing Les Forts Latour has triple origins. Indeed, it is a combination of:

• Some plots from l’Enclos which could have been used for the Grand Vin.
• The younger vines from l’Enclos.
• As well as plots surrounding l’Enclos, which include prestigious names such as Petit-Batailley or Saint-Anne.

Les Forts de Latour embodies the prestige of this legendary estate with its rich density, depth, and elegance. It is a highly accessible second wine that offers a glimpse into the complexity and sophistication of its elder. 

Lisa Perrotti-Brown and Antonio Galloni gave 96 lovely points to the 2016 and the latter stated that “it holds tons of promise. […] was impressive a few years ago. It is even better today.” while Neal Martin scored the 2000 with 95 points and specified that “This is only just beginning to show what it can do.”

A blend of 64.3% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35.3% Merlot, and 0.4% Cabernet Franc, the 2016 Les Forts de Latour is deep garnet-purple in color. It is just a touch closed to begin, soon unfurling to deliver wonderfully pure, ripe blackcurrants and juicy plums scents, followed by suggestions of candied violets and cardamom with a waft of crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins with fantastic tension and a core of tightly wound black fruits, finishing long and earthy.

The 2016 Les Forts de Latour is the clear highlight among these new releases from Latour. The first thing that is evident about the 2016 is the pedigree of the vintage. Undisputedly great. Readers will find a potent, dark Forts de Latour endowed with massive concentration and tons of depth. The 2016 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but it holds tons of promise. Hints of gravel, sage, licorice and pencil shavings linger. The 2016 was impressive a few years ago. It is even better today.

Deep red. Aromas of blueberry, plum, leather, tobacco and mocha. Sweet, plummy and pliant, with a creamy, fine-grained texture for the vintage. Very plush wine, richer than the 2006 and at least as long. Finishes with big but ripe tannins.

The 2000 Les Forts de Latour has a very perfumed and floral bouquet, beautifully defined, precise and precocious; hints of eucalyptus emerge with time. The palate is well balanced and intense, delivering black fruit laced with mint and tar. The concentrated finish gently grips the mouth. This is only just beginning to show what it can do.
