This collection features some of the best wines from the Left Bank, such as the 2011 Chateau Pape Clement which for the same critic “clearly transcends the entire vintage”, the 2001 Duhart-Milon which fro Neal Martin has “great class and sophistication. Excellent.” – and many more!

“Tasted at the Château Giscours vertical, the 1999 Château Giscours is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Merlot picked between September 21 and October 5. It has a straightforward bouquet with scents of red plum, autumn leaves and a touch of rose petal that needs a little more vigor. The palate is better than the nose, a little more cohesive than the 1998, with more freshness. There is a savory, almost meaty tincture towards the finish, which has a slight ferrous note lingering on the aftertaste. I have not tasted this for ten years, but it shoots just above my expectations. Tasted June 2015”

“The 2000 Château Haut-Bailly is a clear step up over the 1998 and 1999, offering medium to full-bodied richness as well as wonderful purity in its darker currants, tobacco, chocolate, and graphite-like aromas and flavors. It’s concentrated and powerful, yet most of the baby fat has fallen away, and this is a classic Haut-Bailly (despite being a more Merlot-shifted blend) that has ripe, polished tannins, a seamless mouthfeel, and a great finish.”

“The 2001 Lynch-Bages has a complex bouquet, well defined with a mélange of red and black fruit mixed with freshly rolled tobacco, sage and cedar. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit. It’s sweet and candied with veins of orange peel and hints of sloes and fig towards the finish. I appreciate the harmony here, plus the persistence. Very fine, though on this occasion, it is just pipped by its millennial counterpart.”

“The 2001 Calon-Ségur has a delightful bouquet, very pure and a little more vivacious than the preceding vintage, featuring lovely brambly red fruit, rose petals, autumn leaves and a touch of cigar box, all well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little more cohesive than the 2000, and slightly granular in texture, with a graceful, elegant and quite persistent finish. This is one of the few châteaux where it’s difficult to choose between the 2001 and 2000. Drinking perfectly now.”

“The 2001 Sociando-Mallet is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc picked between September 26 and October 12. This vintage was highly rated, and I can understand why. It has a very open, expressive bouquet of blackberry, briar, sandalwood and a touch of wild fennel that keeps drawing you in. The youthful palate is medium-bodied with fine tannin, and the long, tender raspberry- and Chinese-five-spice-tinged finish is a treat. This is certainly one of the most elegant Sociando-Mallets. Enjoy it over the next decade.”

“The 2001 Lagrange was picked from 3 to 15 October and apparently there are only 29 bottles left at the property as it was opened for the Fête de la Fleur. That is a pity as it is an excellent Lagrange. Black fruit, cedar and cigar box on the nose, later developing lovely floral top notes flanked by sandalwood and sage. The palate is fresh and vibrant with crisp acidity. This is well balanced with finer tannins than the 2000, impressive focus with a touch of spice towards the balsamic tinged finish. This is well worth seeking out. Tasted at the Lagrange vertical at the estate.”

2001 Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou

“Now at 20 years of age, the 2001 Ducru-Beaucaillou reveals liquorice, menthol, leather, tobacco and black berry aromas with a smoky hint. The attack is lively and although the palate has a moderately dense structure to it, the tannins are still a bit juicy at this stage. There is a hint of both animal and dark berries on the long, airy finish. It is now on the cusp of its apogee.”

The medium-bodied palate is packed with black fruit preserves and exotic spice hints, framed by chewy tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and earthy.”

“Tasted at the château, the 2004 Montrose is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between 24 September and 15 October. It has a foursquare but precise bouquet that unfolds in the glass to offer brambly red berry fruit, tar, undergrowth and cedar aromas. There is a touch of mint that emerges with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that gently grip. It is more savory than other vintages: hints of bacon fat and bell pepper towards the harmonious finish that lingers nicely in the mouth. Probably earlier drinking that other vintages, yet this Montrose has personality and will give drinking pleasure for 15-20 years. Tasted September 2016.”

“The 2011 Clerc-Milon is quite high-toned on the nose with black cherries, bilberry, black olive and light graphite scents. This gains more composure as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins. There is good weight and freshness here, well-balanced with that dash of white pepper on the finish (though less of the truffle than last time.) Still, this is worth your attention.”

“The 2011 Pape Clement, a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, was aged 18 months in new French oak before being bottled unfiltered. Absolutely profound, with a complex bouquet of mulberries, black cherries, black currants, graphite and subtle smoke and burning ember-like aromas, this is a true super-star of the vintage. It represents a remarkable achievement by the winemaking team of Bernard Magrez. Full-bodied, rich and multidimensional, this wine clearly transcends the entire vintage. It should age effortlessly for 25 years.”
