Burgundy 2022: Domaine Chavy-Chouet

The charismatic Romaric Chavy presides over this significant (15+ hectare) domaine based in Meursault.  Romaric comes across as particularly easy-going, even laissez faire, yet his wines positively reverberate with nervous energy.

As a Meursault estate Chavy-Chouet’s whites have always taken centre stage.  The style is whistle-clean and ultra-precise, with incisive acidity giving shape to fleshy orchard fruit characters.  Describing a previous vintage, William Kelley (The Wine Advocate) summarised the style as, “pure, tensile wines that are typically distinguished by their racy acids and aromatic precision.

Since we first visited in 2019, Romaric has further refined his style but the bigger news is the uptick in quality of his red wines.  Today, Chavy-Chouet is a producer of engaging, fruit-driven, crunchy and gourmand Pinot Noir.  Imagine you stroll into a Beaune cafe and are looking for the ideal glass of modest red to pair with a plate of saucisson – look no further than the Bourgogne La Taupe.

“Beaucoup de buvabilité” says Romaric, meaning that this is for drinking, not sipping.
– from Jasper Morris MW’s review of Bourgogne La Taupe 2022

For 2022 we have secured a range of Chavy-Chouet en magnum.  Big vintages are a great excuse to buy magnums, and there’s little doubt that wine ages and tastes better from large formats.  As prices shoot to the skies it becomes harder to justify big bottles of Grand Crus, so we are buying these more sparingly, but we thrilled to offer some village Crus and Saint Aubin in magnums – and we highly recommend tucking a few away.

Domaine Chavy-Chouet is cresting a wave as the wines grow in popularity and renown yet the wines still deliver on value.  This range of pure and elegant 2022s – all around a featherweight 13% alcohol – is sure to build their reputation even higher – from stunning Bourgogne, to over-achieving village lieux dits, to a smattering of classy 1er Crus.
Have a great weekend,
Matthew Hemming MW

Volnay 1er Cru Sous la Chapelle 2022
$280 per magnum (w/ GST $119.90)
** Very limited availability **

Just two ouvrées of 15 year old vines. Not in bottle. Mid crimson, attractively perfumed, just a bit sweaty, concentrated raspberry with some strawberry, good acidity. 100% whole bunch gives the style. A long and lifted finish with purity, suggests that this will come together very nicely. Drink from 2027-2034.
90-92pts – Jasper Morris MW

Bourgogne Aligote ‘Les Marechaux’ 2022
$270 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $305.20)

88/100 – Jasper Morris MW

Bourgogne Blanc ‘Les Femelottes’ 2022
$330 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $359.70)
Pale lemon yellow. Attractive juicy fruit on the nose. Quite a graceful approach, backed by more than adequate density of fruit, lemon scented ripe apples, good length. Classy Bourgogne Blanc from a particularly good site. Drink from 2024-2027.
89/100 – Jasper Morris MW

Meursault ‘Clos des Corvees de Citeau’ (monopole) 2022
$840 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $915.60)
$290 per magnum (w/ GST $316.10)

An attractive lemon yellow. Just after bottling the oak has taken the higher ground. Good lemon intensity behind the white fruit which fills the middle ground. Quite a fleshy Meursault, though still in balance. Drink from 2026-2033.
91/100 – Jasper Morris MW

Saint Aubin 1er Cru Les Murgers des Dents de Chien 2022
$900 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $981)
$320 per magnum (w/ GST $348.80)

Clear pale lemon, a little oak, but quite an intensity of ripe fruit, even a little plum note. The density of fruit is really impressive, with greater volume than anything to date. Drink from 2027-2035.
93/100 – Jasper Morris MW

Puligny Montrachet ‘Les Enseigneres’ 2022
$960 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $1,046.40)
$335 per magnum (w/ GST $365.15)

Not in bottle. Pale lemon and lime. The bouquet leaps out of the glass, with an intensity of fruit taken at perfect ripeness. Excellent energy through the middle, racy and still fine. The Enseignères leaves a beautifully balanced aftertaste. Drink from 2027-2034.
92-94pts – Jasper Morris MW

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Champs Gain 2022
$1,200 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $1,308)
Not in bottle. Clear paler colour, and a more refined nose. Very good tension, a lime note, very good backbone, in some ways more a St-Aubin while the Murgers des Dents de Chien seems more like Puligny. Both vineyards are 37 years old. Persistent finish. Drink from 2028-2036.
91-93pts – Jasper Morris MW

Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Folatieres 2022
$1,200 per case (1×6) OC (w/ GST $1,308)
Bottled yesterday. Pale colour, elegant and stylish, then keeps going, this isa Folatières of elegance more than weight, with a classy and nuanced white fruit. Allow for this to develop more body as it grows up in bottle. Drink from 2028-2037.
94/100 – Jasper Morris MW
