Burgundy 2023: Domaine de la Folie

Domaine de la Folie is a Rully estate that is quietly producing quite lovely whites and reds from their own vines surrounding the family maison…These wines are terrific value

After a break for Lunar New Year celebrations, we are pleased to resume our 2023 Burgundy offers with our allocation from Domaine de la Folie.

Baptiste and Clemence Dubrulle do not produce expensive Burgundy but their wines contain a kind of magic that reflects the passion, care and soul they lavish on this very special property.  Here, Clos St Jacques is white instead of red, as well as being priced accessibly for drinkers.

In days gone by, Rully enjoyed much more prestige and Domaine de la Folie was its grandest estate.  Baptiste and Clemence are reclaiming that legacy of quality, crafting wines that shine with the authenticity of hands-on farming and terroir expression.

  • Old vine Aligote, from a monopole site and the superior Aligote d’Oree clone, delivers a richness rarely seen from this variety, balanced by the grape’s naturally high acidity.
  • Rully Clos de la Folie comes from Chardonnay vines within the same vineyard as the Aligote, just below the family home.  It is the domaine’s purest, most crisp and direct expression.
  • Of the two 1er Cru wines, Clos du Chaigne is characterised by poise, precision and elegance.  Clos St Jacques, made from vines nearing a century of age, carries much greater intensity and texture.

Both reds are from the Clos de la Bellecroix, with Cuvee Marey being a selection from the easterly-oriented portion of the vineyard.  The regular Clos de la Bellecroix only sees a small proportion of oak, the balance being matured in tank, and the 2023 is a gorgeously lifted, fragrant and gourmand style that is dangerously hard to resist.  Cuvee Marey is more structured, sees 25% new oak, and the greater ripeness and intensity give it an ageing potential of at least a dozen years.

Delicious wines from a genuinely charming couple, the Domaine de la Folie 2023s are going to delight those who love drinking Burgundy, as opposed to collectors amassing trophy cabinets of bottles!

With warmest wishes,
Matthew Hemming MW

Domaine de la Folie
2023 Bourgogne Aligote
SGD $240 ($261.60 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
A monopole site, from Clos de la Folie.  Delicate sweetness and citrus blossom.  Has a clear saline signature.  Great acidity and focus.  There’s no oak here but, all the same, the Aligote delivers a creamy mid-palate.  Texture from grapes, and the intensity from vine age, rather than winemaking.  Despite a very tensile acidity, there’s a sustained sweetness throughout.
90/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Bourgogne Aligoté comes from vines planted in the middle of the Rully Village and saw no wood contact. It has a light nose with touches of peppermint in the background and a hint of linseed oil. The palate is nicely balanced with a rounded texture and a touch of pink grapefruit and golden raisin toward the finish. Fine.

2023 Rully Clos la Folie
SGD $300 ($327 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
Has some nutty richness but also shot through with a saline crunch.  Sweet orchard fruit, with some notes of white stone fruit and melon.  Soft fruit on the back end is balanced by a twang of salty acids.
89/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Rully Blanc Clos la Folie comes from the monopole. The nose has a touch of dried pineapple and light hints of vanilla and orange blossom. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry, straightforward and citrus-fresh with a lovely texture. A dash of lemongrass lingers on the finish. This blossoms in the glass.
89/100 – Neal Martin

2023 Rully 1er Cru Clos du Chaigne
SGD $360 ($392.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
Just filtered, yesterday, so showing some degree of shock.  Notes of butter and flowers.  Today, after the filtration, it’s quite rounded and maybe missing a degree of detail that will return with time.  More hazelnut tones on the finish, which broadens out as it fades.
89-91pts – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Rully Blanc Clos du Chaigne 1er Cru has less wood influence than the previous year due to a different type of charring to the barrels with lower heat. It has a forward and vigorous bouquet with patisserie and light peach skin scents. There is more aromatic presence than the Clos la Folie. Quite spicy and phenolic, the palate is well balanced with a keen line of acidity and a persistent finish. This has great potential.
91/100 – Neal Martin

2023 Rully 1er Cru Clos St Jacques
SGD $390 ($425.10 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 20 cases available
Vines of almost 100 years old on a terroir of very thin soil and exposed mother rock.  Lots of millerandage (small berries), so producing a very intense style.  Showing quite a lot of oak today, but has just been filtered so the fruit is muted.  Superb acidity and drive on the palate.  Bright, expressive and lucid.  Really engaging and full of energy.  Drives through the mid-palate and cleanses.  So fresh and pristine.  Snaps and crackles on the saline-inflected finish.
92-94pts – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Rully Clos St. Jacques 1er Cru comes from a 1.69-hectare monopole and was matured in 20% new oak. It has a very aromatic bouquet with tropical fruit, passion fruit and touches of white peach. There is wonderful definition and vigor here. The palate is well balanced with a silver thread of acidity and notes of lemon thyme and orange pith, very harmonious on the finish. This is an excellent Clos Saint-Jacques (not from Gevrey!).
92/100 – Neal Martin

2023 Rully Clos de Bellecroix
SGD $300 ($327 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 15 cases available
Now matured in a proportion of oak, which allows a degree of oxygenation and avoids too reductive a style.  Sappy, fresh and fragrant.  Gourmand style.  Sappy red fruit that is jewel-bright and pristine.  Wild raspberries on the finish.
91/100 – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Rully Clos de Bellecroix, which is raised half in vat and half in barrel, offers brambly red berry fruit on the nose, a little earthy in style, maybe a little rustic but with plenty of charm. The palate is medium-bodied with a soft texture on the entry, mainly black fruit laced with allspice, harmonious with a soft landing on the finish. Enjoy this over the next four or five years.
88/100 – Neal Martin

2023 Rully Cuvee Marey du Clos de Bellecroix
SGD $330 ($359.70 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC) – 25 cases available
Very fragrant and floral – aromas of irises and flowers.  Peonies.  The fruit is concentrated and this has a more prominent structure, but there’s also plenty of cut and a bright, persistent acidity.  Lots of energy on the back end, that sustains the finish and holds interest.
92-93pts – Matthew Hemming MW

The 2023 Rully du Clos de Bellecroix Cuvée Marey, raised in 25% new oak, has more intensity on the nose than the regular cuvée. Blackcurrant and raspberry open, leaning more toward the latter as it opens in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, lightly spiced with a dash of black pepper toward the finish. Enjoy this over the next decade.
90/100 – Neal Martin

NB – when I tasted with Clemence, some of the wines were finished and in bottle, others samples were from barrel of tank.  Finished wines get a final score whilst I gave ranges to those still to be bottled.  MH
