Fantastic Pommard with a Sprinkling from Louis-Michel Liger-Belair

We are delighted to offer the Domaine de la Commaraine, Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru from the vintages 2018, 2019, 2020 & 2021 which have just arrived with us in Singapore.

This 3.75-hectare monopole on the outskirts of Pommard village was bought in 2017 by Harvard professor Denise Dupré and Mark Nunnelly, former managing director of a Boston-based capital fund. Louis-Michel Liger-Belair is the consultant here. It has a walled vineyard, insulated from outside influences, is ideally suited to organic and biodynamic farming—and will be now be worked accordingly.

Great scores from the critics who say “showing very well – a fine combination of Cote de Beaune fruit with Liger-Belair vinification…a charming, immediate and open-knit Pommard…a major statement about this appellation in the 21st century.”

These are in original cases and offered in pristine condition. Please let us know if you would like to secure some of these beauties

DOMAINE DE LA COMMARAINE

2018 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru
3 Magnum cases (3×1.5L) OC @ SGD $1,680 per mag case (inc GST $1,831.20)

“The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Clos de la Commaraine Monopole is the inaugural vintage for this new estate, and 20 barrels were produced, 10 of which were new and the remaining 10 once used. Cropped at 40 hectoliters per hectare and entirely destemmed, the wine has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with a rich bouquet of wild berries and raspberries mingled with hints of orange rind, woodsmoke and toasty oak. On the palate, it’s medium to full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with succulent acids and melting tannins, concluding with a perfumed and nicely defined finish.”

“The Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 2018 is showing very well – a fine combination of Cote de Beaune fruit with Liger-Belair vinification (cold soaking and modest, careful extraction, with 60% new oak as opposed to the 100% normally used for his Cote de Nuit wines). The Commaraine is beatifully perfumed with spicy minerality, blue fruit and a stony, almost fully limestone impression. It is an elegant wine with a delicate balance between the refined vinification and the interesting terroir. It does lack a bit of depth, energy and effortlessness that will presumably come with additional years of biodynamic viticulture. The potential is there however; this is a very enjoyable first attempt, so let’s see what this terroir reveals. It seems like the limestone soil in the northern part of the vineyard in particular produces an interesting mineral canvas for this wine.”

“The 2019 Pommard 1er Cru Clos de la Commaraine Monopole has turned out nicely, wafting from the glass with aromas of sweet berries, plums, exotic spices, raw cocoa, orange rind and peonies. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it’s supple and succulent, with melting tannins and a pretty core of fruit. This is a charming, immediate and open-knit Pommard that subverts dated stereotypes of the appellation.”

“The 2020 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru was tasted from several subplots as the final blend will not be made until later. Certainly, there are inter-subplot differences so I could only get a gist of the wine, though judging by the main parcels, I found floral aromatics, violet and iris flower, with fine acidity and purity, also judicious use of oak. I will taste the final blend next spring, but certainly these components are promising.”

“Tons of blood orange and candied orange on the nose makes this a very striking Pommard. Very concentrated and highly structured on the wide-screen palate, but a big wave of ripe berry and citrus fruit pours over the mineral and tannic core to make a major statement about this appellation in the 21st century. Long, moderately dry finish. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.”

2021 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine 1er Cru

“The 2021 Pommard Clos de la Commaraine is a monopole owned by the domaine due to be overlooked by a luxury hotel currently under construction. This is completely de-stemmed. Two bottles were opened as I was not happy with the first – and a good decision as the second is much fresher. Quite earthy in style, you might actually assume there are some stems in the mix. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, a keen line of acidity, not amazingly complex yet cohesive and with an attractive pastille-like finish. There’ll be better to come, but this is commendable for a challenging growing season.”
