A truly grand "village cru" from Les Guinaudeaus

Since the 1600s the vineyards, meadows and woods of Chateau Grand Village have been the home of the Guinaudeau family.  The wines of this ancient farmstead are lavished with all the care and love you would expect of proud owners, showcasing the produce of the place where they live.  In recent years the Grand Village vineyard has benefitted from a programme of replanting, using cuttings taken from the old vine stock of Chateau Lafleur in Pomerol.

At the same time the Guinaudeau family and their are able to test drive new ideas and techniques at Grand Village, before graduating them to Pomerol’s finest vineyard: Lafleur.

As Jacques Guinaudeau describes, within the Burgundian framework, Grand Village is the village cru to Lafleur’s Richebourg.  Each year it is one of the savviest buys of the en primeur season.  In 2022, it takes some of the density and intensity of the vintage and tames it with a spine of mineral tannins and a cool elegance that is the signature of Lafleur’s DNA.

Chateau Grand Village 2022

Striking aromas – very floral and lifted with notes of lavender and peonies.  Very juicy profile of small berries.  High definition in its clarity and vivid fruit.  Shows a density to match the vintage profile but MUCH fresher and more piercing than you’d anticipate.  Has a dry, saline cut and a sappy bitterness..  Builds in volume and finishes with the lift and juiciness of freshly sliced fruit.

The 2022 Grand Village, aged in 30% new oak, has a briny, estuarine nose with dark berry fruit and light floral scents (iris flower). The palate is medium-bodied with a peppery opening. Nicely structured, hints of black olive and black pepper emerge with time. The finish is mineral and slightly grippy yet also balanced, off-dry and slightly granular. Give it a couple of years in bottle because this is seriously good, cut from a much finer cloth than vintages a decade ago.

The 2022 Grand Village is a powerful, brooding wine. Swaths of tannin wrap around a core of black fruit, gravel, incense, licorice and chocolate in a potent Grand Village that overdelivers. The 2022 is a wine of notable substance and breadth. I wouldn’t dream of opening a bottle for at least a few years. The 2022 is the most intense young Grand Village I have ever tasted. There is serious potential here.

Baptiste Guinaudeau and his team have produced a beautifully pure, perfumed 2022 Grand Village that bursts with aromas of licorice, graphite, blackberries, pencil shaving, iris and fresh mint. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and fleshy, this outstanding wine is perfectly balanced on the palate with velvety tannins and a bright, saline finish. This is one of the very best Grand Villages produced to date, and it benefits from the sort of careful winemaking normally reserved for cru classé wines. It’s a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc, although for the latter grape the Guinaudeau family prefers the local name of Bouchet.
