A Vinum En Primeur Exclusive From Pomerol!

We are thrilled to make our opening offer of Chateau Seraphine 2022, the Krajewski family’s haute couture, luxury cru from Pomerol.

At Vinum, our love affair with the great wines of Pomerol is well known.  At the same time as working with the undisputed icons of the region – Chateau Lafleur, the Moueix family and the Thienponts of VCC and Le Pin – our passion for undiscovered gems and new talent burns as brightly as ever.

It was this passion for Pomerol that led us to Chateau Seraphine, one of the newest additions to our family of exclusive agency wines.  Friends in the trade suggested we might want to taste this new cru and we pricked up our ears when we saw enthusiastic notes on the early vintages from the late, great, Steven Spurrier.  Our appetite was further whetted when Chateau Seraphine won a place in The Wine Advocate’s Top 100 Wine Discoveries of 2020.

2022 is just the 6th vintage for Chateau Seraphine and winemaker Charlotte Krajewski.  Each year Charlotte seems to refine and further fine-tune the wine’s style.  Tasting the new vintage at the chateau in April, I was struck by the understatement and sophistication of the wine this year.  Previous years have been bolder and more concentrated but the 2022 is fundamentally savoury and has a classical earthy character.

Pomerol is ground zero for quality in 2022 – in a year in which Bordeaux has produced a wealth of extraordinary wine, the greatest concentration of quality is to be found here.  Sadly, Charlotte was able to produce just 4,000 bottles of Chateau Seraphine for the entire world.  Please let us know quickly if you’re keen to secure some for your own cellar.

The Offer:
Offered subject to remaining unsold. Available in late 2024 / early 2025.

There is plenty of inner richness and intensity here but the overall profile is compact and stylish.  Sleek, dark and, above all, succulent fruit – dark, juicy berries backed by spice.  A touch of the 2022 roasted note but this just brings complexity as there’s plenty of vibrant acid lift and energy.  Nicely plummy and fresh on the back end.  Finishes savoury and grippy.

The 2022 Séraphine, the 6th vintage under proprietor Martin Krajewski, was picked from 1 to 23 September at 30hL/ha (for the older vines pruned single Guyot), matured in 50% new oak, and one 1,000-liter clay amphora. This leans toward black fruit on the nose, blackberry and bilberry, touches of incense and terracotta. Nicely defined and quite understated at first. Maybe it needs just a touch more vigor but that should develop. The palate is medium-bodied with svelte tannins, harmonious, nicely detailed with just the right amount of spiciness. Quite vivid toward the finish, gentle grip with a dash of white pepper on the aftertaste. 4,000 bottles produced.

92-94pts – Neal Martin / Vinous

A blend of 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Seraphine is deep garnet-purple in color. It features evocative scents of plum preserves, black cherries, and mulberries with hints of tar, tilled soil, and iron ore. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers bags of juicy black fruits with rounded tannins and impressive freshness, finishing on a fragrant earth note.
