“The 2014 Pontet-Canet is composed of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. Deep garnet colored, it needs coaxing to reveal a profound core of baked plums, creme de cassis, and cigar box with wafts of tapenade, wood smoke, and mossy bark, plus a spicy hint of cumin seed. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has an impressive foundation of ripe, grainy tannins and lively acidity supporting the muscular black fruits, finishing on a lingering peppery note.”

“Proprietor Alfred Tesseron and winemaker Jean-Michel Comme produced an absolutely stellar Pontet-Canet in 2015. Sumptuous, racy and totally inviting, the 2015 is all class. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, spice and exotic floral notes build as the 2015 shows off its alluring personality. Even with all of its raciness, the 2015 speaks with authority and power. Fine tannins extend the persistent, highly nuanced finish. The 2015 is 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot aged 50% new oak, 4% in terra cotta and 15% in neutral oak. Tasted three times.”

“The Tesseron family (currently the proprietors of St.-Estèphe’s Lafon-Rochet and Pauillac’s Pontet-Canet) made its fortune in the Cognac business, and it is one of the few families to possess ancient stocks of great vintages that have not been diluted with water or manipulated in any manner. They released small quantities of Lot 29 (1929), which remains the most ethereal Cognac I have ever tasted. I’m no expert, but their newest release, the 1953, seems close in quality to the 1929. Slightly darker than the 1929, the 1953 is pure silk, which at this alcohol level is very dangerous indeed. The complex aromatics can fill a room. (Hedonist’s Gazette)”

“The NV Cognac Lot 53 comes from Ugni Blanc and Colombard that spent more than two generations in Limousin oak casks. Its medium-gold color is followed by a beautifully complex Cognac that has lots of lavender, orange blossom, smoke, and hints of licorice. “The Tesseron family, who made their fortune in Cognac (but are probably best known by wine lovers as the proprietor of Pontet Canet and Lafon Rochet) released tiny quantities of single vintage Cognacs. Although French law does not permit a vintage date to be used, this is all from 1929, and is very limited in availability. I’m not an expert on Cognac, but anything this smooth, silky, potent, and aromatic, is truly great stuff. It is about as ethereal Cognac as anyone could ever hope to drink. (Hedonist’s Gazette)”

“The Cognac X.O. Exception Lot No. 29 is a powerful, almost tannic spirit. A blast of kirsch, sweet spice, chocolate, cedar and warming alcohol races across the palate. This release is young, young, young. I admire the density, but this really does need time to settle and come into its own. Spice, tobacco, cedar, dried flowers, caramel and dried orange peel linger. The No. 29 is a Cognac that is more about aromatic nuance and structure, with fruit pushed into the background. The Lot. 29 is a blend of 75+ year-old eau de vies, Ugni Blanc, Colombard and Folle Blanche, all Petit Champagne.”

“A remarkable spirit, Tesseron’s Cognac Extreme is blended from eau de vies from 1860 through the early 1900s. It offers up scents of wild cherry, sage, mint, tobacco, cedar and sweet spice, all in a deceptively medium-bodied, refined style. The Extreme is intensely floral but also has quite a bit of depth and tons of character. I admire its graceful, layered almost ethereal personality. It is a contemplative, wonderfully dynamic Cognac to savor at the end of a meal. Terrific.”

“The 2018 Pym-Rae is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 10% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet-purple in color, it needs considerable swirling to unlock evocative, pristine notes of juicy blackberries, ripe blueberries, cassis, and red currant jelly, followed by hints of lavender, crushed rocks, bay leaves, and iron ore, with a fragrant waft of cinnamon and cloves. The densely laden, full-bodied palate bursts with ripe, perfumed black fruits, supported by firm, very finely grained tannins, and fantastic tension, finishing with a long-lasting firework display of red berry and earthy sparks. With a 4–6-hour double-decant, it is delicious now, but if you want that next-level experience, give it a good 5-6 more years in bottle and drink it over the next 40 years+.”
