Chateau Gloria 2022 - promises one of the best points:price ratios of the vintage

A classic Saint Julien, Chateau Gloria is deservedly popular amongst Bordeaux lovers yet is perhaps unfairly over-looked en primeur in favour of its more glamorous neighbours.  In bottle, Gloria is a perennial over-achiever and frequently out-performs more senior classed growths at the Southwold and 10 Years On tastings.

When tasting the 2022s we paid particular attention to seeking out potential value picks and Gloria ticked every box.

Neal Martin’s 94-96pt rating seals the deal.  It puts Chateau Gloria ahead of wines such as Langoa Barton, Talbot and Clos du Marquis, and within kissing distance of Saint Julien’s finest.  All this for just £375 per dozen en primeur!

In our vintage report, I wrote that this could be the year to stop being surprised at Gloria doing so well in bottle and to start buying it en primeur.  I would add that it makes sense to harness another benefit of purchasing en primeur and consider ordering some different formats. 

Magnums, and particularly half bottles, can be hard to find further down the line – half bottles of Chateau Gloria 2022 will make for ideal mid-week drinking in just a few year’s time, whilst magnums (or bigger) will age gracefully and elevate larger celebrations in the future!

The 2022 Gloria was picked from 12-26 September and matured in 40% new oak, slightly less than the Saint-Pierre. It has a perfumed, floral nose with crushed violet infusing the black cherry and blueberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with sumptuous tannins that belie the structure underneath. With pure fruit and well-judged acidity, this 2022 is sensual with a persistent and lightly spiced finish. Superb.
