Dom Perignon 2008 - the real deal!

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is a huge, powerful Champagne and also clearly one of the wines of the vintage

– Antonio Galloni / Vinous

Unquestionably the finest Dom Pérignon of the decade

– William Kelley / The Wine Advocate

In wine – as in life – time flies.  It feels like only yesterday we were launching the 2008 Champagnes but, in reality, the major houses are now releasing 2016s and many growers have 2018s on the market.  One constant, however, is the quality of 2008.  This is an exceptional vintage whose wines have fended off all pretenders to the crown.

Dom Perignon 2008 sits amongst the highest echelons of the vintage and we are thrilled to have secured a parcel of 30 pristine cases, carefully sourced in Europe.

It is hard to think of a Dom Perignon – excluding Rose and Plenitude releases – to top the 2008.

  • 2004 and 2002 both have their fans but the 2008 is a more complete Champagne.
  • On release, the 1996s were highly celebrated but time has brought out a hardness to the acidity that age has failed to soften.
  • Personally, I adore 1988 Champagne but Galloni scores the DP just 94/100 versus 98+ for the 2008.
  • Next up for consideration might be the 1982…but we’re getting into the mists of time and some rather old Champagne.

What becomes clear is that 2008 is a strong candidate to be named the greatest Dom Perignon in a generation.

As time passes, and vintages move on, we are seeing less and less 2008 in the market.  Huge quantities of Dom Perignon 2008 have doubtless already been drunk but I’d not suggest pulling too many corks at this stage – this is a DP for the future!

In that future, 2008 Dom Perignon is going to be one of the Champagnes we all aspire to drink; one of the labels that brings a hush to the table in anticipation of that cork being popped.  Do make sure you have a case or two in the cellar!

The 2008 Dom Pérignon is fabulous, but quite remarkably, it was even more open when I tasted it a year ago. Bright, focused and crystalline in its precision, the 2008 is going to need a number of years before it is at its best. Lemon peel, white flowers, mint and white pepper give the 2008 its chiseled, bright profile. Several recent bottles have all been magnificent. What I admire most about the 2008 is the way it shows all the focus, translucence and energy that is such a signature of the year, and yet it is also remarkably deep and vertical. In other words, the 2008 is a Champagne that plays in three dimensions.

98+/100 – Antonio Galloni
