Domaine Ramonet Part 2: Astonishing Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru Vertical

Fantastic Domaine Ramonet Cellar
PART 2: Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru Vertical

Domaine Ramonet needs no introduction as their wines are among the most highly sought-after in the whole world. Today, we are delighted to offer the second part of an extraordinary cellar featuring a Ramonet vertical of Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru.

Chassagne-Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru
Les Ruchottes, a prominent Premier Cru vineyard in Chassagne-Montrachet, consistently produces wines of exceptional elegance and complexity. This vineyard, technically a sub-division of the La Grand Montagne climat, is proudly stewarded by Domaine Ramonet, which possesses 0.6 hectares out of a total of 2.1 hectares.

Perched at altitudes ranging from 260 to 280 meters above sea level, this premier cru enjoys a steep slope that ensures optimal sun exposure and ventilation. The soil of the vineyard, a blend of Bathonian limestone and chalk-clay marl, encourages deep root growth, infusing the wines with minerality and concentrated flavors.

The critics adore these wines saying: “every bottle has been superb…excellent concentration, incisive acids and a long, precise finish…the track record of this wine is so good that I wouldn’t care to bet against it rounding into form with a few years of keeping.” Further to this, Allen Meadows brands the latest vintages as ‘Outstanding’.

2013 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

12 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 630/ bottle (inc GST $680.40)

“The 2013 Ruchottes from Domaine Ramonet is a lovely wine, but it is one of the more backward 2013 premier crus that I have tasted in the last year and it is still in need of a few more years of bottle age before it will properly blossom. With a bit of coaxing, the bouquet delivers a vibrant blend of apple, lemon, a touch of spearmint, chalky minerality, white flowers and vanillin oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and nascently complex, with a good core, fine soil signature and a long, tensile and beautifully focused finish. In a perfect world, this would still see another couple of years in the cellar before the next bottle is opened. (Drink between 2020-2045).”

2014 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

24 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 725/ bottle (inc GST $783)

“The 2014 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes is a real classic, opening in the glass with notes of mint, apple, pear and subtle noisette, deftly framed by a touch of reduction and new oak. On the palate, the wine approaches grand cru concentration and depth, with a velouté texture, lovely controlled amplitude and terrific definition and length. While this will only really begin to realize all its potential with 5 or 6 years in the cellar, I confess to having already enjoyed almost a case of this wine off wine lists in Burgundy; every bottle has been superb.”

2015 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

18 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 550/ bottle (inc GST $594)

“The 2015 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes doesn’t attain the same heights as the 2014 rendition, but it has handled the warmth of the vintage very well and remains quite classic in profile, with a very typical bouquet of pear, iodine, wheat toast, buttered apples and a framing of new oak. On the palate, the wine is concentrated and full-bodied, with excellent amplitude and dimension, and a greater sense of reserve than any of the other 1er Crus in the cellar this year.”

2016 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

12 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 625/ bottle (inc GST $675)

3 Magnums (x1.5L) @ SGD$ 1,500/ Mag (inc GST $1,620)

“The 2016 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Ruchottes is superb, wafting from the glass with aromas of Anjou pear, iodine, tangerine oil and wet stones, subtly framed by a delicate touch of new wood. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, ample and satiny, with excellent concentration, incisive acids and a long, precise finish. This is more old-fashioned than the 2014 rendition, and if that wine resembles the domaine’s 2010, this has more affinities with the 2008.”

2017 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

12 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 725/ bottle (inc GST $783)

3 Magnums (x1.5L) @ SGD$ 1,800/ Mag (inc GST $1,944)

1 Jeroboam (x3L) @ SGD$ 4,500/ Jero (inc GST $4,860)

“There is a vaguely phenolic character (think olive oil nuances) to the ripe mix of both white and yellow orchard fruit, soft wood and pretty spice wisps. There is excellent volume and particularly so for the vintage to the medium-bodied and exceptionally rich flavors that are at once caressing yet powerful while delivering fine length and outstanding complexity on the clean and markedly dry finale where the only nit is a hint of warmth. This youthfully austere effort is clearly built-to-age and in contrast to some of the prior wines, I would not be inclined to drink this young.”

2018 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

5 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 600/ bottle (inc GST $648)

“Smoky and nicely fresh aromas speak mainly of petrol, citrus blossom, spice and a discreet hint of wood influence. There is fine energy to the fluid, round and delicious middle weight flavors that possess average density but excellent punch and power before terminating in a markedly bitter lemon rind and noticeably warm finale. This is very 2018 in style as one can “feel” the sunshine and a wine that is going to need at least some bottle age to better harmonize as it seems somewhat awkward at present. With that said, the track record of this wine is so good that I wouldn’t care to bet against it rounding into form with a few years of keeping.”

2019 Domaine Ramonet, Chassagne Montrachet Les Ruchottes 1er Cru

17 bottles (x75cl) @ SGD$ 700/ bottle (inc GST $756)

“Here too there is ample petrol influence on the lightly wooded aromas of pear, apple, crushed anise and a whisper of resin character. There is fine volume, richness and power yet the mouthfeel of the medium weight plus flavors is at once powerful yet refined, all wrapped in a lightly stony, serious and youthfully austere finish. As is virtually always the case with this wine, it’s presently quite tightly wound and while it could be approached after only 5-ish years, 10 would definitely be better.”

93 Points Allen Meadows – ‘Outstanding’
