Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair 2020s - our main offer

Now that he is fully at home in the new winery down by the railway, Thibault’s wines are gaining in both quality and consistency.  There are several stand out wines in 2020.
– Jasper Morris MW / Inside Burgundy

Thibault Liger-Belair has long been one of Vinum’s closest friends in Burgundy.  It is a relationship we cherish – we are looking forward to welcoming Thibault back to Singapore in late 2024 – and it has been a privilege to support this diverse and dynamic domaine over the years.

Unlike many other estates, we do not offer Thibault’s wines en primeur but wait until the wines are bottled and shipped to our cellars before we release each new vintage.  The 2020s have now arrived, and are resting safely with us in Singapore, so we are delighted to make our first major offer of this exciting vintage from Thibault Liger-Belair.

I recently completed the Burgfest tasting of 2020 whites and, this morning, finished writing my report on the tasting so the vintage is fresh in my mind.  In broad terms, 2020 was a warm – if rarely ferociously hot – and dry year, with a notable heat wave in August.

The resulting wines are ripe yet frequently carry counterintuitively high levels of acidity and freshness.  In particular, they tend towards particularly low pH values, meaning the acid in 2020 is of a greater intensity than usual.  This seems to have been caused by the August conditions promoting evaporation from the fruit that served to concentrate acid levels.  In the wines this has elevated their mineral qualities and delivered taut and linear 2020s, bursting with energy in both colours.

Based in Nuits Saint Georges, Thibault would have been threatened by the hail that struck the village in August but, thankfully, this was localised away from most of his vineyards.  Indeed, Jasper Morris MW has declared the 2020 Les St Georges, “Easily the best I have ever tasted here.”

Of course, both the Richebourg and Charmes Chambertin are the Grand Cru showstoppers you would expect.  But both the Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes and modest Aligote Clos des Perrieres la Combe are 5-star wines (Inside Burgundy) and well worth space in the cellar.

As ever, this is a charming and exciting range from one of our long-standing favourite producers.  We raise a glass to Thibault’s achievements and invite you to stock up on these delicious 2020s.

Cheers,
Matthew Hemming MW

This is macerated on skins for a week, then pressed and vinified in wood (not new). It was racked in September and is now ready to bottle. Clear bright lemon colour. The bouquet is less flamboyant than some years but with a really impressive weight of wine. Wow! A wonderful concentrated mouthful. Moving well away from the standard idea of Aligoté. White fruit, infused with a limestone freshness, not so far from oyster shells in style. This is macerated on skins for a week, then pressed and vinified in wood (not new). 2020 Savigny les Beaune Le Clos du Village
SGD $360 ($392.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
10 cases available

88-90pts Neal Martin / Vinous
The 2020 Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos de Village Blanc comes from a genuine clos and contains around 25% Pinot Blanc. It has a bright bouquet with yellow fruit, hints of candle wax coming through with aeration. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a saline finish. Palpable energy here, quite persistent, this should age well in bottle.

2020 Bourgogne Gamay Les Deux Terres
SGD $240 ($261.60 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
30 cases available

Bistro wine par excellence?  This combines Thibault’s twin passions – 85% Gamay from Cru vineyards in the Beaujolais, blended with 15% Pinot Noir from the Cote d’Or.    The result is a refreshing, juicy and toothsome red Burgundy for casual drinking with friends.

2020 Bourgogne Rouge Les Chaillots

21 cases available

86-89pts – Outstanding – Allen Meadows / Burghound
Earthy and sauvage-suffused aromas include those of dark currant and soft wood nuances. The racy, bright, sleek and nicely precise flavors also conclude in a mildly rustic but delicious and lingering finale. This is really quite pretty and a wine that should drink well young.

2020 Hautes Cotes de Nuits Le Clos du Prieure
SGD $330 ($359.70 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
10 cases available

90-92pts – Matthew Hemming MW
A high proportion of whole cluster fruit influences the aromas – has an inviting scent of spice and pepper.  One of the more delicate of Thibault’s Hautes Cotes wines, there is finesse and fragrance to this.  Firm tannins sit over ripe, plump berry fruit.  Dry and grippy finish with some salinity.

2020 Nuits Saint Georges La Charmotte
SGD $540 ($588.60 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
6 cases available

90-92pts Jasper Morris MW
Rich complex purple. An all-enveloping rich raspberry fruit, significant power behind, fortunately good acidity as well, all in plush red fruit, some tannins behind. Plenty to enjoy here, rich but neither cooked nor over alcoholic at 13.5%. 40% whole bunches aid the freshness.

2020 Chambolle Musigny Vieilles Vignes
SGD $660 ($719.40 inc GST) per case (6*75cl OC)
8 cases available

92-94pts & 5-stars Jasper Morris MW
From five plots, both below and above the village. 40% whole bunches. Very fragrant, classically Chambolle, violets, nothing of a hot vintage, vibrant, absolutely mouth filling, these are old vines from the 1950s for the most part, with a lovely long pulled out red fruit finish. Very fine indeed. Built on a fruit acid balance more than tannins. This year I find the blend more compelling than the two small bottlings of single vineyard Chambolles.

Deep purple more than black, the nose is classier and more together than the Clos Vougeot. Actually this is brilliant as soon as the nose starts to open. Wow! This has all the classic depth of Les St-Georges but it seems to have a Vosne side heady joy as well. A huge glorious mouthful, a little white pepper tingle (45% whole bunches), but a royal quality of deep dark raspberry fruit, sensational finish. Easily the best I have ever tasted here. The 2020 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru contains whole bunch coming from the older vines planted in 1944. I admire the vitality on the nose here, taut and fresh with crushed strawberry and cranberry scents, plenty of mineralité and tension. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy red fruit, fine structure, slightly chalky towards the finish with a persistent aftertaste. Excellent.

Discreet wood frames elegant, pure and exuberantly floral-suffused aromas of earth, red and dark fruit and lovely spice wisps. The equally elegant and refined middle weight plus flavors are supported by surprisingly fine tannins on the balanced, long and impressively complex finale. This is really very good; indeed after the Richebourg it’s the second most interesting wine in the range in 2020.

2020 Richebourg Grand Cru

The 2020 Richebourg Grand Cru contains 30% whole cluster this year from vines planted between ‘31 and ‘34. It has a beautiful bouquet, very pure with perfumed red fruit, crushed limestone, rose petals and touches of truffle. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit, gentle grip, slightly chalky in texture. What I admire is the discrete build in intensity, delivering Richebourg-like power and density on the finish. Very classy, but do have a cellar and patience handy.
