Born in a vintage of incredible adversity, Dominus 2020 is a tribute both to the quality of its vineyard and the single-minded dedication of the Moueix team. 

Discussions of 2020 are always going to be dominated by talk of the devastating fire that started on Glass Road.  Moueix have always been known for relatively early harvesting – they don’t chase the super-ripe, powerhouse wines that are late-picked – and in this case that meant all their fruit was in before the fire started on 27th September.  Even so, it was necessary to use specialist air filters to exclude smoke from the winery.

Even before the fire, however, 2020 was a year marked by extremes of water stress and heat.  As a result, production of Dominus is down a full 50% which has been reflected in the reduced allocations we have received.  Whilst we want to spread our allocation as widely as possible, please understand that we have to limit orders to three bottles per customer.

A producer’s true mettle is not shown in the great vintages – anyone can shoot fish in a barrel – but in the years of challenge and hardship.  Moueix have long been known for out-performing difficult seasons in Pomerol; in 2020 they demonstrate their ability to do so in the Napa Valley.

So many of California’s benchmark names did not make or will not release 2020 wines and the production of Dominus was decimated – we hope our customers will treasure these rare bottles in their cellars, and savour Dominus 2020 over many years to come.

A blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the 2020 Dominus has a deep garnet-purple color. It rolls out of the glass with expressive notes of baked blackberries, preserved plums, and kirsch, with suggestions of Indian spices, sandalwood, potpourri, and black truffles, plus a ferrous hint. The full-bodied palate delivers a firm, grainy texture with just enough freshness to support the generous fruit, finishing long and oh-so-spicy. Yum!
