Fete du Bourgogne: Philippe Colin 2021 & Sylvain Pataille 2020

Week one of our Fete du Bourgogne series opens with classical, fine-boned whites from Philippe Colin and a selection of 2020s from the man who single-handedly redefined perceptions of Marsannay: Sylvain Pataille.

A scion of the Colin family of Chassagne Montrachet, Philippe Colin is a son of Michel Colin-Deleger who divided his domaine between his sons, Philippe and Bruno.  He is also related to Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey whose father, Marc, was a cousin of Philippe’s father.

The Philippe Colin style is for elegance and subtlety rather than weight and power.
– Jasper Morris MW / Inside Burgundy

Today we are happy to offer a selection of 2021s from Domaine Philippe Colin.  This is a tragically small vintage but one in which whites have a structure and classicism that echoes the great years before global warming.

Sylvain Pataille is an oenologist who quietly consults to some very high profile domaines.  His pioneering single vineyard wines and considered approach to everything he does have challenged almost every assumption about his home turf of Marsannay.

There is no assumption in viticulture or vinification that he does not challenge, but there is no sense that he is being contrary for its own sake. The result? Some stupendous wines, mostly from terroirs and sometimes grapes as well, that would scarcely have been on anybody’s radar a few years ago.
– Jasper Morris MW

2020 – much less challenging to winemakers than ’21 – is shaping up to be an excellent vintage in the Cote de Nuits.  Collectors should jump on the opportunity to buy a case or two of Pataille’s outstanding crus.

Domaine Philippe Colin

Bourgogne Blanc 2021

9 cases (1×6) OC available @ $300 per case (w/ GST $324)

** Limited to one case per client **

Subtle though still easily perceptible wood is present on the ripe aromas of apple, pear and soft citrus wisps. There is a lovely sense of energy to the dense and palate soaking flavors that terminate in a delicious, refreshing and lingering finish. This mildly rustic effort is really quite good and worth a look.

86-89pts – outstanding – Allen Meadows / Burghound

Chassagne Montrachet 2021

9 cases (1×6) OC available @ $540 per case (w/ GST $583.40)

** Limited to one case per client **

Fresh aromas include notes of resin, petrol, white orchard fruit and an even more subtle application of oak. There is excellent concentration to the caressing yet vibrant and quite powerful medium weight flavors that also flash a touch of rusticity on the bitter lemon-inflected finish. Also worth a look.

89-91pts – outstanding – Allen Meadows

Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes 2021

9 cases (1×6) OC available @ $720 per case (w/ GST $777.60)

** Limited to one case per client **

A cool, pure and airy nose reflects notes of the essence of white orchard fruit, lemon-lime and subtle oak. There is again and really lovely texture to the vibrant and highly seductive middleweight flavors that also conclude in a clean, bone-dry and impressively long finale where a touch of bitter lemon character can be found. This is surprisingly powerful and a wine that should age gracefully.

90-93pts – outstanding – Allen Meadows

Chevalier Montrachet Grand Cru 2021

4 cases (1×6) OC available @ $1,950 per case (w/ GST $2,106)

** Limited to one case per client & subject to allocation **

To be purchased with other wines from this offer to an equal value

Subtle but not invisible wood frames equally cool and pure aromas that are also markedly floral in character along with plenty of spice wisps. There is excellent intensity to the concentrated, indeed almost thick and opulent, flavors that exude ample minerality on the compact, powerful, serious and bone-dry finale. This is a big, rich and lush Chevalier that should also be capable of extended keeping though be approachable young.

93-95pts – Allen Meadows

Marsannay 2020

13 cases (1×6) OC available @ $540 per case (w/ GST $583.20)

The grapes are a mix of domaine and purchased fruit, vinified with 80% whole bunches. I tasted it from tank and from foudre. Rich deep centre, offering much more weight of fruit than the Bourgogne. This is full racy and exciting with a beautiful glossy dark fruit that is still red rather than black. Excellent length. The foudre version has plumper fruit on the nose, more rounded on the palate though with the whole bunch more evident.

Marsannay Le Chapitre 2020

13 cases (1×6) OC available @ $810 per case (w/ GST $874.80)

Incredibly deep dark purple. Ripe, picked late, whole bunch and verging on pyrazine but probably more white pepper instead. Very backward, fresher behind, much darker colour of fruit, will be complete and powerful but I have not fallen in love with it so much today. Sensational length of aftertaste, so it may just be in an awkward phase.

89-92pts – Jasper Morris MW

Marsannay Les Longeroies 2020

14 cases (1×6) OC available @ $810 per case (w/ GST $874.80)

A little deeper and fresher in colour than Montagne and the bouquet is more in pinot fruit and less in whole bunch – so the balance is more in fruit than flowers. But both of course are mingling nicely. A little stricter behind, the same white pepper. Not racked and in a deep cold cellar for two years ageing. Darker fruit.

Marsannay Clos du Roy 2020

11 cases (1×6) OC available @ $900 per case (w/ GST $972)

The most complete to date. Also in the cool cellar for two years ageing. A deep full colour, clearly very intense but retiring into its shell. Super sweet velvety fruit, all the fruits of the rainbow, entirely red, a wonderful mineral thread, exceptional length. What an aftertaste!

91-93pts – 5-star wine – Jasper Morris MW

Marsannay L’Ancestrale 2020

6 cases (1×6) OC available @ $1,800 per case (w/ GST $1,944)

** Limited to one case per client & subject to allocation**

To be purchased alongside one case of either Marsannay, Le Chapitre or Les Longeroies

Medium to deep colour, not quite clear. Very long slow fermenter and shows on the muddled nose with some oxidation. That is not how the wine will finish up by the time it is bottled. Give this much more time, it has not even been racked yet. The wine on the second half of the palate shows all its qualities with a sweet deep raspberry fruit. Just some oxidative étanales to sort out. Very backward indeed, but this will all get sorted out: though I cannot give it the top marks it will probably deserve as it shows today.

88-93pts – Jasper Morris MW
