First release: Sandrone's brilliant 2019 Barolos

Last month we were thrilled to host Barbara Sandrone and her daughter Alessia in Singapore.  Over a series of dinners and events we presented the family’s wines to private customers and sommeliers, including the freshly-arrived 2019 Barolos.

Today it is our great pleasure to make our opening offer of Barolo Le Vigne and Barolo Aleste from this awesome vintage.

“The 2019s are classic Barolos, with a tannic grip and nervous acidity the likes of which I haven’t seen in years…When compared to 2016, absolutely one of the greatest vintages ever in Barolo and in Barbaresco, the 2019s are racier and more primary at this stage while the 2016s were already approachable upon release…The best 2019s promise fantastic aging potential.”
– Kerin O’Keefe

2019 is a Barolo vintage of intensity and structure allied to fabulous energy.  These are big, tannic and powerful wines but they are not at all fatiguing to taste.  The substantial tannins have great finesse and the acidity provides refreshing lift.

Le Vigne is a classic blended Barolo, finding harmony in combining fruit from single vineyard sites in  Serrlunga d’Alba, Castiglione Falletto, Barolo itself and Novello.  2018 is the first Le Vigne to include fruit from the vineyard of Le Coste in Monforte d’Alba.

Aleste is the evolution of Luciano Sandrone’s original Barolo Cannubi Boschis.  In Barbara’s words this was, “the most beautiful gift that my father could give to his beloved grandchildren.”  He took his most prized possession – his plot of Cannubi Boschis – and re-named it in honour of his grand-daughter Alessia and grandson Stefano.  Combining their nicknames: Ale + Ste = Aleste.

It is important to stress that, despite the sad passing of Luciano, the family and estate have continued absolutely along the pathways he envisaged for Sandrone.  In the same way, whilst Aleste is a new name it is simply a new incarnation of Cannubi Boschis – the vineyard and winemaking continues unchanged.

2019 is a great vintage for Sandrone – we loved presenting the wines in Singapore and they received great acclaim every time bottles were poured.  We have no doubt that these are future classics and urge all Barolo-lovers to try and secure an allocation.

“The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is pure and total seduction. Kirsch, sweet pipe tobacco, mint, cedar, dried herbs and orange peel all grace a Le Vigne built on mid-weight structure and energy. There is a feeling of youthful classicism and austerity that is so beguiling. Readers should plan on being patient, though. The 2019 won’t be ready to drink anytime soon, but there is enough fruit to make me think it will be superb, in time.”
97/100 – Antonio Galloni / Vinous

“The 2019 Barolo Le Vigne is a historic blend of fruit from Baudana in Serralunga d’Alba, Villero in Castiglione Falletto, Vignane in Barolo and Merli in Novello. This year, a fifth site was added to the final blend. It is the Le Coste MGA in Barolo with south-facing exposures and 45-year-old vines in a two-hectare parcel. The backbone of this wine is Baudana, and Merli adds freshness. The wine needs more time in bottle, but already it proves generous and bold with dark fruit, spice and crushed mineral.”
97+/100 – Monica Larner / The Wine Advocate

Barolo Aleste 2019
$1,020 per case (1×6) OWC (inc GST $1,101.6)
** Purchases restricted to 1 case per customer & subject to allocation **

“The 2019 Barolo Aleste is another stellar wine from Sandrone. Like Le Vigne, the Aleste is a tightly wound ball of energy. Dark cherry, mocha, plum, licorice and lavender all race across the palate. This racy, but youthfully austere Barolo has a ton to offer. There’s more density and a darker profile than in the Le Vigne, sort of like a soloist to Le Vigne’s orchestra.”
97/100 – Antonio Galloni

“Aleste is a contraction of the names Alessia and Stefano, grandchildren of the late Luciano Sandrone. With fruit from Cannubi Boschis, the 2019 Barolo Aleste shows important richness and structure. This is the proverbial Barolo with a capital B. It reveals thick layers of dark fruit, cherry and spice. It shows sweet tannins and impactful texture. When tasting at the winery, Le Vigne is usually served first, and Aleste comes after that. Both wines promise a very long aging window.”
97/100 – Monica Larner
