From Opus One: The 99-Point 2018 and 2019 Vintages

We are thrilled to offer the huge-scoring new releases of the iconic Napa red, Opus One. With 99 points apiece from James Suckling the 2019 and 2018 vintages, re-released as there is no 2020, are a stellar pair of wines from one of Napa’s most important wineries.

Opus One’s connections with Chateau Mouton-Rothschild and 40+ years of crafting one of California’s benchmark Cabernets have made it one of the USA’s most famous wines. Under the inspired leadership of winemaker Michael Silacci, Opus One has never been better than it is now, as is demonstrated by near-flawless scores for these two vintages. .

For James Suckling, each is a near-perfect Opus One. He finds, “The purity of fruit is really something else here”, and “Fantastic length and structure to the wine, with tightness and focus” in the 2019, while the 2018 is “full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes” and “The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement”.

We also have a small amount of the fascinating Opus One Overture available. A blend of the 2019 and 2018 vintages that sees extra time in barrel, it is designed to be silky, opulent and to show well on release.

The purity of fruit is really something else here, with currants and fresh flowers, such as violets and roses. Flower stems as well. Fantastic length and structure to the wine, with tightness and focus. Wonderful fruit. Graceful. A blend of 78% cabernet sauvignon, 8% merlot, 7% petit verdot, 6% cabernet franc and 1% malbec. 2018 Opus One

Extremely perfumed and floral with lavender, lilacs and violets to the sweet, ripe berries, such as blackberries and blackcurrants. Some slate and graphite, too. It’s full-bodied, yet ever so balanced and refined, with super fine tannins that last for minutes. Fresh herbs, such as bay leaf and lemon grass highlight the dark fruit. The quality of tannin is exquisite with wonderful polish and refinement. Lasts for minutes. So wonderful to taste now, but better after 2026. www.jamessuckling.com
