Rarely does a wine on the first rung of a producer’s quality ladder punch so far above its weight:
So how does Isabel Ferrando achieve such feats in a $125 (ex-GST) wine?
As of the 2020 vintage this visionary producer took the bold step of discontinuing her prestige cuvees of Chateauneuf-du-Pape in favour of the flagship blend offered today. In the past both Collection Charles Giraud and Reserve Auguste Favier had won outstanding ratings – including perfect 100/100s – from the critics, and sold at considerable premiums. Both bottlings were sacrificed in order to boost the the quality of the ‘regular’ Chateauneuf, as all the superior fruit is now channelled into that wine.
As the reviews show, Isabel’s bold gamble has paid off from her first vintage; her Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020 is a triumph and stands equal to some of the region’s Goliaths at just a fraction of the price.
Today, Ferrando produces fragrant wines of remarkable elegance
– Nicolas Greinacher / Vinous
Isabel’s style is for wines of purity, scent and finesse. It is almost a conscious reaction against the bodybuilder wines of extraction and power that dominated the region in the early years of this century. Chateauneuf may always express a degree of volume and intensity but Isabel’s tannins are fine-grained and silky, rather than monolithic, her aromas privilege floral tones and spice over black fruit and kirsch.
Vinum are proud to be exclusive agents for Famille Isabel Ferrando in Singapore and delighted to be showcasing the new incarnation of her out-performing Chateauneuf-du-Pape.

Now the flagship of this estate, the 2020 Châteauneuf Du Pape is 75% Grenache and the rest Cinsault, Mourvedre, and a little Syrah. Sporting a deep ruby/purple hue, it offers a beautiful array of black raspberry and darker cherry fruit as well as lots of graphite, chalky minerality, Provençal garrigue, and spice. Beautiful on the palate as well, this medium to full-bodied effort has a layered, multi-dimensional mouthfeel, rock-solid underlying structure and concentration, building tannins, and a gorgeous finish. It needs to be forgotten for 2-4 years (although it certainly offers incredible pleasure even today) and will keep for two decades. Tasted twice.
