Le Pin's Baby Brother: L'If 2019

L’If, owned by Jacques Thienpont of Le Pin, has experienced remarkable growth since its acquisition in 2010, making it one of Bordeaux’s most sought-after wines. With an annual production of approximately 1,000 cases, securing a bottle has become a coveted opportunity. Therefore, we could not be more thrilled to offer a substantial quantity of the 2019 vintage directly coming from the Chateau!

The name “L’If” derives from the presence of a yew tree on the property, alongside the Pin (pine tree) and l’Hêtre (beech tree). Spanning a small area of about 2.5 hectares, the vineyard predominantly cultivates Merlot grapes, complemented by a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc. Like its big brother, Le Pin, L’If prioritises low yields and meticulous vineyard management to craft wines of exceptional quality.

L’If has gained acclaim for its precise and intricate style, accurately reflecting the terroir of Saint-Emilion while highlighting the expertise of Jacques Thienpont and his team. Although it may not possess the same level of renown as Le Pin, L’If has captivated wine enthusiasts and critics such as Antonio Galloni, Jeb Dunnuck and Jeff Leve who awarded this 2019 vintage with no less than 97 & 97+ points saying:

“L’If is a wine to buy and cellar for a decade or more. I loved it… It is brilliant stuff that has everything you could want from a great wine…The layers of sweet, opulently-textured, dark fruits, linger and expand, leaving you with an intense, sensual wave of fruit on the backend.”

“The 2019 L’If is the sort of wine I would like to spend hours with. There is just too much to it. At times the 2019 is opulent and quite racy, and yet in other moments its the underlying minerality and tension in the wine that are most evident. Black cherry, herb, incense, licorice and mocha gradually open over time. The 25% Cabernet Franc comes through nicely, both in the wine’s aromatic profile and overall structure. L’If is a wine to buy and cellar for a decade or more. I loved it.”
97+ Points Antonio Galloni

“The 2019 Château L’If is brilliant stuff that has everything you could want from a great wine – richness, opulence, elegance, and complexity. Based largely on Merlot, it reveals a dense purple hue as well a great bouquet of ripe black cherries, redcurrants, smoky tobacco, and chalky minerality. Full-bodied, pure, elegant, and wonderfully concentrated, it has enough tannins to warrant 4-5 years in the cellar and will be a 25+-year wine.”
97 Points Jeb Dunnuck

“Deeply colored, the wine jumps with a strong sense of florality before moving on to its licorice, wet earth, spice, black cherry, and chocolate coated plums. Rich, full-bodied, deep, long and intense, the wine hits all the right notes and keeps on hitting them long after the wine has left your glass. The layers of sweet, opulently-textured, dark fruits, linger and expand, leaving you with an intense, sensual wave of fruit on the backend. Drink from 2026-2050.”
97 Points Jeff Leve
